As news of Braun Strowman returning to WWE is piping hot again, let’s look back at the time when the superstar was badly lashed out for a controversial comment. The COVID-19 pandemic was just like a nightmare for the whole wrestling industry as the pandemic not only led to fans being away from the arenas but also led to closure of companies who could not bear the expenditure in the difficult times.
Not only superstars faced themselves laced by the pandemic but also needed to perform in pre-taped matches amid all this. WWE cancelled its biggest event due to the pandemic which was the first time in its history that the event couldn’t take place. Majorly all wrestling promotions around the world received huge losses and some had to shut down as well.

Even WWE had made huge releases in both early and later stages of the pandemic releasing many of its superstars as the part of budget cuts. You can imagine the state of the industry when a pioneer like WWE had to make budget cuts then what should’ve been the condition of smaller or indie wrestling promotions.
Yes, it was quite in turmoil as well. Indie wrestlers were released in massive numbers as they were left jobless and had nowhere to go. But, a few people know that Braun Strowman had caused a massive controversy over a tweet that he allegedly made against the indie wrestlers. However it was not long enough when Strowman had the taste of his own medicine when he also got released some months later.
When AEW superstar Evil Uno had requested fans to help wrestlers in need, this is what the former Intercontinental Champion had replied – “Here we go with more of the somebody pay for my bills stuff. If you can’t afford to pay your bills maybe you should change professions. That’s why I quit strongman.
I loved it, but I couldn’t afford to live so instead of making a go fund me or a Patreon wanting someone else to take care of me I went out and worked harder than I ever have in my life to get to where I am. What happened to being accountable for your own actions????!!!” Strowman basically wanted to convey that those who can’t pay their own bills should switch their profession.
But the comment didn’t sit out well with the people as they blasted Strowman for insensitive comments. Strowman was trending on Twitter for all the bad reasons. However, Strowman would clarify months later that people had taken it the wrong way. While talking to CBS Sports Strowman clarified – “I still believe in it,” Did it age terribly?
Absolutely. I made that comment months before the lockdown, (…) Of course, everybody ran wild with it and tried to make more out of it than it really was (…) At the end of the day, it was motivational (…) Sometimes in life your goals and what you dream about, you can’t do.”
