In the same interview with WSI, Ken Shamrock admitted that Bret Hart was actually interested in dropping the WWF Title to him. However, when all this conversation took place the former Intercontinental Champion had no idea what was happening behind the scenes but was surely excited about the opportunity.

While talking about the incident, Hart said- “Bret told me before the Screwjob happened. He came to me and said that he wanted to do a program and he wanted to drop the strap to me. I didn’t understand what was happening, and he didn’t say anything either, it was just like this is what he was gonna pitch to Vince, this is what we were gonna do.”

However, before this could become a reality, Vince McMahon stripped Hart of the title because of the fear of him walking out with the title to WCW. This is when Hart abruptly lost a championship match against Shawn Michaels, which he was supposed to win at Survivor Series, 1997. Vince McMahon had ordered the match to be stopped in between and awarded a submission win to Michaels when in reality Bret Hart had never tapped out. Thus, the Montreal Screwjob was born.
