Cody Rhodes at the ESPN ESPY awards
Cody Rhodes has been out of action since his legendary performance at the Hell in a Cell in June of this year. Rhodes fought against Seth “Freakin” Rollins despite the pectoral muscle tear. He was lauded for his courage by many wrestling legends and wrestling pundits all over the world. Rhodes underwent a successful surgery and is said to be out of action for the remainder of the year, with many speculating him to return at the Royal Rumble.
Cody Rhodes was a decent wrestler during his first run in WWE but now he has reinvented himself by joining AEW before coming back to WWE again. Cody Rhodes recently appeared at the ESPN ESPY awards, where he was nominated for the WWE moment of the year award. The other nominees were the Undertaker for his Hall of Fame induction, Stone Cold Steve Austin for stunning Mr. McMahon, and Big E cashing his MITB contract. He presented the Comeback Athlete award along with Actress Alison Brie to Klay Thompson.
Cody Rhodes defeated Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 38
Cody Rhodes won the award for his comeback to WWE at WrestleMania 38. Cody was also a presenter at the awards. After his win, Cody Rhodes said that he was excited to be nominated and that returning to WWE was the best decision he had made in his wrestling career. He said that beating Steve Austin and the Undertaker for the award is really a big thing and feels good.
Before the Show, Rhodes entered a Tortilla Challenge with host ESPN anchor Gary Striewski. The Tortilla Challenge is trending on TikTok and involves two people slapping each other with Tortilla. Cody hit Gary very hard with the tortilla but also acknowledged Gary’s slap saying that he got him good.
On the first night of WrestleMania 38, it was revealed that Seth’s opponent at the event would be “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes. At the event, Seth Rollins rammed Cody’s face with a pedigree and went for the pinfall, but the latter managed to kick out. Towards the end of the match Cody delivered two Cross Rhodes and also performed his father’s move the Bionic Elbow, thereby giving his father a tribute. Cody Rhodes performed a final and third Cross Rhodes on Rollins and won the match via pinfall.
Thereafter, Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins have faced each other two times and a total of three times, with Rhodes ending on the winning side each time. Seth even cost Cody the United States Championship match against Theory on an edition of RAW in May.
