“I just wanted to thank everybody” – When Drew McIntyre broke WWE rule

“I just wanted to thank everybody” – When Drew McIntyre broke WWE rule

Drew McIntyre is a fromer multiple time WWE Champion

Drew McIntyre won the 2020 Royal Rumble match, earning a shot at the WWE Championship against Brock Lesnar at the year’s biggest show. The match took place at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and that saw McIntyre win his first world title. Because of what was going on around the globe at the time with COVID, the show was held at the WWE Performance Center in front of empty seats.

As there were no fans in the audience, McIntyre chose to look directly into the camera, physically reaching out to the viewers at home. Drew confessed in the weeks following WrestleMania that his post-match celebration actually violates one of Vince McMahon’s WWE rules.

Drew McIntyre explained to the media in April 2020 that Vince McMahon tells WWE Superstars not to look directly down the camera, which he did after his huge title win.

One of our rules in WWE is that you don’t look down the camera and break the fourth wall like you wouldn’t do in a movie, but I couldn’t help myself. In that moment, I just wanted to thank everybody for supporting me, for supporting WWE during this time, and choosing WWE to take your mind off these difficult times. I wanted to let everyone know how I felt, and I’m so glad we kept that in the show. I wasn’t sure if it would be edited, because I really meant it.”

Drew McIntyre went on to say that because there were no supporters in the arena for his big triumph, he felt compelled to stare down the camera to connect with them:

Finally, when I had won the title, I saw the emotion and remembered how real it was to me. In that moment, it was real again as I was watching it. I went upstairs, I opened the door and I took the title out, now that it was official.”

McIntyre went on to keep the WWE title until October 2020, before losing it to Randy Orton at Hell in a Cell.
