‘Got the news before Obama’ – Fans still in shock as they revisit John Cena’s iconic ‘Osama bin Laden has been compromised’ speech
Fans revisit the time when at Extreme Rules 2011, John Cena broke the news of Osama Bin Laden's death to the WWE Universe.

Barack Obama and John Cena
On the night of the Extreme Rules PPV in 2011, John Cena announced to the WWE Universe the death of Osama bin Laden. It is probably one of the proudest moments for any American watching the event at that time.
Cena left fans stunned as he made the announcement. Previously, he was involved in a 3-Man WWE World Championship Steel Cage match, where he faced The Miz and John Morrison. After Cena won the match, he put down his world championship and broke the news to the fans in the audience.
After the match, John Cena addressed the crowd and announced to the WWE Universe the death of the terrorist, Osama bin Laden. For a lot of people, this was how they first heard the news. No one expected Cena to make the announcement. In fact, the news hadn’t even hit national television yet. Even the president at the time, Barack Obama, was yet to address this publicly. John Cena said the following at the event:
“I walk out here every night with hustle, loyalty and respect on my sleeve. That is a credo I’ve adopted from the people who defend the freedom of this country. The President has just announced that we have caught and compromised to a permanent end Osama bin Laden.”
After hearing Cena’s speech, the WWE fans broke into a chant of “USA!USA!USA!”. As Cena made his way to the ramp, The Stars and Stripes Forever played over the speakers. It was definitely a proud moment for all Americans in the audience, as well as for those watching at home. The WWE Universe rejoiced upon hearing the good news and celebrated it with cheers echoing throughout the arena. It was a memorable night, indeed.
Cena later talked about him breaking the news of Laden’s death to the public:
“The only thing I felt in that moment was the need to tell everyone in the arena, because as an American it was the right thing to do. I realize a lot of people heard it for the first time from me, but I’d like to think that if anyone had been in my shoes, they would have done the same exact thing”.
