Even though Bill Goldberg has been praised for his character work and in-ring ability, his in-ring prowess has been criticized by many and has been termed as reckless in the ring. Bill Goldberg and Bret Hart were the prominent superstars of WCW and both were involved against each other in a match at Starrcade 1999. The match was for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship and was won by Bret Hart via submission but was a controversial one and similar to Montreal Screw Job as Goldberg hadn’t tapped out. A rematch occurred on WCW Nitro, which was won by Bret Hart.

During the match Bill had performed a mule kick on Bret, which gave Bret a severe concussion. Unaware of the severity, Hart continued to perform in some matches and thereafter he was diagnosed with post-concussion Syndrome and had to vacate the Championship after 27 days. Thereafter, the concussion forced Bret Hart to retire from wrestling. Since, then Bret has termed Bill as unprofessional and as someone who had the tendency to hurt everyone in the ring.

During a recent appearance on Talk is Jericho podcast Goldberg talked about Bret Hart and the incident at Starrcade 1999. He said that there was absolutely no malicious intent to hurt Bret and that the incident bothers him and he will probably take it to the grave. Bill said that he has apologized a lot to Bret Hart and that he won’t continue to tear himself down. Goldberg said that if Bret can’t accept his apology, then it is what it is and everyone should move on like him.

“There was absolutely no malicious intent whatsoever. None. Zero. So, does it bother me? Yeah, I’ll take it to my grave. But, also, I’ve gotta say, man, and I’m at a turning point, I’m done saying I’m sorry. I’ve said it a million times and I’m not gonna continue to tear myself down. I’m done. I’ve said I’m sorry. If he can’t accept my apology, it is what it is. You’ve gotta move on, and I’ve moved on.”

Goldberg will complete 25 years in the wrestling industry on September 22 this year.
