No one expected less from what Gunther and Drew McIntyre just did. In the beginning, it was methodical and slow-paced. However, with each passing second, the intensity of the offences kept rising. Gunther first gained the upper hand, throwing McIntyre all over the place.

However, for veterans as equipped as Gunther and McIntyre, it was just a matter of time before they brought the audience into the game. As soon as they introduced those brutal chops, things escalated. The Ring General ensued with the chop spree, causing severe bruises on Drew McIntyre’s chest.

In response, Drew hammered down some of his own on the Champion. At one point, they were going back and forth with knife-edged chops over each other. Once they perched on the top rope, both men slapped the meat out of one another’s skins. McIntyre successfully planted the leader of the Imperium with a Claymore Kick, but Gunther got his shoulder up in time.

After that, once the Austrian got into his head, he executed several clotheslines, followed by his patented powerbomb. And just like that, the reign of the Ring General still continues. Also, Gunther now marches on to break Honky Tonk Man’s 454-day record. The 35-year-old just needs to hold the title for another 33 days to etch his name into the history books.

For sure, Drew McIntyre’s loss would’ve hurt some fans. However, going by the general consensus, Gunther retaining his title seems like the correct decision. He’s extremely close to the all-time record of becoming the longest reigning IC Champion. Hence, fans in general think that WWE actually made the right call.

Now, the question arises what’s next for Gunther? Last week on Raw, Chad Gable outclassed the Imperium leader in a 5-minute challenge. After the show, Gable declared that he’s coming for Gunther’s title after SummerSlam. That said, it could be a fun rivalry moving forward on Monday nights. On the other hand, the future of Drew McIntyre remains uncertain at this point.
