The semi-main event bout of WrestleMania Night 1 was for the Intercontinental Championship. The emotional ride for Sami Zayn took him through the toughest challenge of his career. With the record-breaking reign of Gunther at the forefront, it was nearly implausible to have Zayn win the match. However, The Ring General’s derogatory remarks about Zayn’s wife made him do the impossible.

Gunther was constantly mocking Zayn’s wife and even made fun of him. He was dominating the match as usual, but these sh*t talks were all over the bout. The match saw some of the best wrestling but also followed an emotional background that had the IC Champion show how Zayn was not suitable for the title.

Gunther has been built around as the biggest threat any wrestler could ever face. For the nearly past two years, he had carried the IC title around his waist and became indestructible. That obviously generated a sense of pride in him and unleashed his cockiness through the heel persona he perused. The moment when The Ring General ordered Sami Zayn‘s wife to throw a towel and accept defeat was the best example.

The former Bloodline member did not hold back and gave it his all with his moves. The momentum was built when Sami ate a botched Helluva Kick and ran back for his own. The finish of the match was something that had the fans on their toes. Gunther was taken to the top rope for a Brain Buster. This was followed by two Helluva Kicks in the corner, which took him down as erupted cheers from the fans at WrestleMania 40.

Sami Zayn claims that he needed this IC Title win

Sami Zayn ended the 666-day historic reign of Gunther. He walked in as the challenger and the usual underdog, but shockingly, he came out successful. This puts Sami in a respectable position—a name that people will surely remember in the future. Also, this win makes him a four-time Intercontinental Champion.

In a backstage interview with Byron Saxton, Zayn claimed that Gunther was his most physical matchup so far. He had tapped into an unknown battle with The Ring General and successfully prevailed out of it. The former Bloodline member mentioned that he was not being dramatic by saying that he needed the win.

I hope I’m not being overdramatic when I say I needed this. I needed this more than I can put into words. More than you know. You talk about that self-doubt, some of it was on television and you saw for yourself. A lot of it, you don’t see.
