Amid the ongoing pandemic in 2020, WWE announced a multi-part documentary series on Vince McMahon. Two years later, reports were that Netflix scrapped the project in mid-2022, due to McMahon’s departure from the company in the wake of the hush money scandal.
The latest report suggests that Netflix will release the project soon. However, McMahon will not have a say in changing the filmed scenes. Speaking to a Bloomberg editor at the Screentime Conference, executive producer Bill Simmons spoke about the much-anticipated docuseries.
Simmons revealed that he and his team had worked on the series for over three years, considering it their best project yet. He also mentioned that Mr. McMahon could watch the documentary but couldn’t alter the final cut.
Bill Simmons said, “I really think it has the chance to be the best one I’ve been involved with, I’ll be interested to see what people think about that one. It was a lot of time, and it was one where Netflix still has final cut of it and it was a little more old-school in the 30 for 30 model. I think it has a chance to be really special.” (H/T Fightful)
The Ringer CEO also revealed that the Vince McMahon documentary is still in development. While details about its release on Netflix remain undisclosed, the series promises to offer a deep insight into McMahon’s controversial life whenever it becomes available.
Backstage details after Vince McMahon’s apparent removal from creative control
Last week, a flurry of rumors started making the rounds that Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel has completely uprooted Vince McMahon’s influence on the weekly creative process of WWE. It was being told that WWE CCO Triple H had been endowed with absolute control over the creative process. That said, the latest report has revealed major backstage details after Vince’s departure.
The latest report via Wrestling Inc. confirmed from WWE sources that Emanuel has indeed given creative control to Triple H. Thus, McMahon can no longer shoehorn his inputs into the weekly programming. The source indicated that while he didn’t directly participate in the creative process, he implemented overnight changes to the product. Moreover, the weekly programming was steered according to his vision and ideas.
Furthermore, the source stated that McMahon’s extrication has heavily benefited the wrestlers. His absence seemingly allowed the superstars to enhance the quality of the matches. Moreover, it cited the recent matches, Kofi Kingston vs. Ivar and Gunther vs. Bronson Reed, as prime examples of the improved quality of the matches. The last few episodes of WWE programming indeed serve as a display of a more relaxed atmosphere backstage.
