Triple H vs. Rob Van Dam was a short-term feud that took place in the year 2002. RVD, the former face of ECW, was settling down on the WWE roster. His feud with The Game was his first step into the main-event scene. Whereas, Triple H, being the King of Kings, was one of the top stars during the Attitude Era and stayed at the top since the start of Ruthless Aggression Era.
The feud started when Eric Bischoff, the general manager of Raw, handed over the newly introduced Big-Gold World Heavyweight Championship to Triple H on an episode of Raw. Later, the new World Heavyweight Champion was interrupted by Rob Van Dam on another episode of Raw.
RVD poked fun at The Game, mocking his taunts and style and ridiculing him. The Cerebral Assassin also fired back with some harsh words, and the two eventually erupted into a brawl. Following that, RVD was announced as the first-ever challenger for Triple H’s World Heavyweight title. And the match was set to take place at Unforgiven.
At the Unforgiven PPV in 2002, The Game defended his title in a highly-athletic and amazing bout against RVD. There were many memorable moments in the match. In one of the most memorable funny moments, RVD was seen spitting water in Triple H’s style, while Hunter was just standing there stunned.
As for the conclusion of the match, RVD was on the verge of becoming the new World Champion in the final moments. However, Ric Flair interrupted and attacked his former friend, Van Dam, with a sledgehammer while the referee was down. This allowed The King of Kings to retain his World title in the end.
