Jamie Carragher has come out in defense of his views on Andre Onana‘s behavior towards Harry Maguire. The former England player replied to an article that criticized the way he looked at the situation between the goalkeeper and defender. Maguire has been a point of major discussion due to his current situation at Manchester United.
The player hardly played any minutes last season. Questions were asked about where his future lies, as it was clear that the manager did not favor the player. Online debates have started on whether the player should make a move away from Old Trafford or not.
Fans have also discussed online the fact that he should not be called up for England due to his lack of minutes. The player then received harsh criticism after conceding an own goal against Scotland after he came on as a substitute. Jamie Carragher, an ex-England defender, stated that he felt sorry for the player.
He recalled an event that took place during Manchester United’s pre-season game. After the ball goes out of play, Andre Onana rushes towards Harry Maguire and shouts at him. “Maguire was still the club captain then. He should have reacted furiously,” Carragher wrote.
I’m well aware of Onana being demonstrative at all his clubs, and I like the fact he communicates.

But to carry on like that in a pre season game when you’ve been at the club 2mins, to the club captain, was way over the top. Any player worth their salt (Keane, Vidic, Rio,… https://t.co/3fob0tmk1Z
Barney Ronay, a football journalist, stated Onana’s actions were common from his days back at Inter Milan. This shouting behavior is often seen by English internationals such as Conor Coady. Carragher refuted this, stating that Maguire’s self-confidence was so low that he could not even argue with the goalkeeper over the mistake.
“The point was Maguire is that broken he didn’t say anything back,” Carragher tweeted. Jamie Carragher believed that Andre Onana was performing for the Manchester United crowd. It is not a secret that United fans have criticized Maguire for several seasons now.

Andre Onana’s rocky start at Manchester United
Onana hasn’t had the best of starts since his career began at United. With 7 goals conceded in 4 games, life has started out rough at OId Trafford. But the blame cannot be fully placed on him. A change in tactics by Erik ten Hag has made United look a lot more vulnerable in games.

Their midfield is often overrun in the middle, causing more issues for the defenders and goalkeeper at the back. Onana was lucky to begin his career with a clean sheet and not give away a penalty. However, that luck has disappeared as the player has conceded in rapid succession since then.
Great victory for the team. Happy for the three points & keep working hard. ???? pic.twitter.com/ceMzRBbR8S

2 against Tottenham Hotspurs, 2 against Nottingham Forest, and 3 against Arsenal. His rocky start is not due to his performance but rather the team’s. The goalkeeper has actually been one of United’s better players this season. However, with 7 goals conceded, it’s hard to defend a player even if he does well. With United’s next game coming against Brighton, Onana will be wishing his defense and midfield do not make life harder for him.
