John Cena made his WWE return earlier this year to put Austin Theory over. Whether he turned out successful in that cause remains to be seen. Being dubbed as the next John Cena of WWE and handpicked by Vince McMahon, Theory has an added responsibility on his shoulders. It would take an immense amount of dedication and natural connect from the WWE Universe for Theory to attain that level.
However, that only time Cena made an appearance on weekly television this year was March 6 Raw in Boston. In what was a homecoming night for the 16-time World Champion, he chose violence. After being interrupted by the current United States Champion, the Cenation Leader knew what he needed to do. What followed that was the ultimate piece-by-piece dissection of Austin Theory.
Cena grabbed the microphone and cooked his WrestleMania 39 opponent. He pointed out how Theory’s still not ready for whatever he’s handed this early. Many fans thought that whatever Cena uttered that night was unscripted and an on the spot thing. However, it was not. During a recent conversation with Sam Roberts on Not Sam Wrestling, the Fast X star revealed some interesting insights about that infamous promo.
The Franchise Player told everything what he actually feels about Theory to him in private. John didn’t mince his words at all by letting the 25-year-old superstar know that he’s way off realism. Calling him a great athlete, John Cena told Theory that ultimately he was the only reason behind the former’s urge to appear in Boston. The Peacemaker star felt the need to step in and make fans care about their match, which Theory wasn’t able to accomplish on his own.
Will John Cena’s sacrifice pay-off for Austin Theory?

At WrestleMania this year, Cena did what he was supposed to do. He just went out there and lost to Austin Theory. However, is there any shift in Austin Theory’s charisma since then? Probably, the answer is no. While it may take a level of patience from the fans, there’s something the Forever Champ needs to work upon. At times, WWE pipes-in sweetened audio from their production trucks during his segments, to make people at home believe that he’s actually getting some reactions.
During the aforementioned interview, Cena warned Theory indirectly. The WWE legend informed his counterpart that if he fails this experiment, that’d be an eventual waste of Cena’s time. After having a long chat, the Prototype inquired Austin about their plot. In the end, the Ruthless Aggression Era veteran decided to go with Theory’s inability to extract natural reactions from the audience as the story.
“If you fail, we waste the equity that I’m willing to give. In that match, if I get hurt, I hold up production, which puts 300 people out of work. Let’s do this right. Let’s get some equity here.’ Then you start thinking about the angles, what’s the most important thing, what’s our story? ‘I don’t believe what you do,’ that’s what I’m going with,” said John Cena.
