“I have to resurrect my past”: Kay Lee Ray undergoes name change
Former NXT UK Women's Champion
Kay Lee Ray, real name Kayleigh Rae, is one of the biggest Superstars on the NXT roster. She has been in the business for over a decade now, having kicked off her career way back in 2009. Ray had started out with SWA Battlezone and for a major part of her career, she performed on the independent circuit.
Kay Lee Ray appeared on TNA in 2014. She was a part of the second season of TNA British Boot Camp. But her run with the promotion was quite short. She made a one-off appearance for WWE on NXT, way back in 2015. In 2017, Ray returned as one of the 32 participants of the inaugural edition of the Mae Young Classic.
In 2019, Ray signed a contract with WWE for the first time and appeared on NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool. She emerged victorious in a Battle Royal match and went on to defeat Toni Storm to become the NXT UK Women’s Championship. This made her the first British-born Superstar to win the title.
Kay Lee Ray went on to hold the title for a record 649 days, before she was pinned by Satomura. Weeks later she showed up on NXT at NXT TakeOver 36. Since then she has been on this brand, where most recently she failed to capture the NXT Women’s Championship from Mandy Rose.
Recently, Vince McMahon has applied a new rule to the Superstars – where they cannot use their real name or the names that they used on the independent scene. As a result, Lee Ray’s name has also been changed. She is now Alba Fyre. “To understand me now, I have to resurrect my past” – tweeted NXT.
Kay Lee Ray’s NXT run
The former NXT UK Women’s Champion, first appeared on NXT after a Championship match between Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai. She then went on to join Io Shirai’s team for WarGames. Earlier this year, Kay Lee Ray came close to pinning Mandy Rose and winning the title, but there was an interference from Toxic Attraction.
This year she even won the Women’s Dusty Cup along with Io Shirai. But she failed to capture the NXT Women’s Championship in a Fatal 4-Way match which involved Shirai and Cora Jade too. Now it remains to be seen whether the name change will lead to a change in gimmick or not.
