In the second half of 2023, NXT signed a former AEW star, Brian Pillman Jr. The name change in WWE made him Lexis King while establishing him as a heel. Lexis was introduced through impressive vignettes and he made his in-ring debut at NXT Halloween Havoc Night 1. Now that he performs weekly on NXT, it is obvious that his main roster call-up in the coming years will be for his career break. In an interview, King stated that one of his dream stories then saw him fighting with Cody Rhodes.

While talking with Chris Van Vliet, Lexis put forth the idea of loving dream stories rather than the known dream match. He recalled spending time with The American Nightmare back at AEW, where he looked at him as a lead figure. Rhodes gave then-Pillman a sense of direction and a purpose to hit the rings. Thus, he sees a big final match with levels of storytelling to offer against Rhodes.

The big story could sync with their journeys and show similarities with both of those second-generational talents. And even though having massive differences like their bond with their respective fathers, would also pay off in a huge bout. King would also add in the fact that their WWE mainstay has been possible due to AEW to a greater extent. Chris brought up another resemblance, stating both stars are hard workers.

"And a dream story for me would definitely be to work with Cody Rhodes. Having spent some time in AEW with him, he was someone I always looked up to."

A father-figured Cody vs. barely father-related Lexis would be a great match between the opposite personas. The plans for WWE pulling this off look far away from until King is on NXT. For now, the focus seems to be on Cody finishing his story as soon as WrestleMania 40. Rhodes has to undergo multiple men at the Royal Rumble for that and emerge victorious to main event the Mania consecutively.

Lexis King states the reason for jumping ships from AEW to WWE

There couldn’t have been a Lexis King if it weren’t for Brian Pillman Jr. During the same podcast with Chris Van Vliet, Lexis stated that the impact of AEW shaped him for WWE. The experience he gained while traveling with the Jacksonville-based promotion has made him the impressive performer he is today.

Once his contract with AEW ended, it was not much of a decision but a straight-up transition to WWE. He claims to feel financially great in there, but that too came with a bit of self-doubt. He was unsure of his future with the company, which became pretty apparent when he was not re-signed by AEW in July 2023.

I mean, it wasn’t so much of a decision as it was just a necessary transition. I think my time came up at AEW, and it was a great, great run, a great deal financially, I did very well there.

King feels thankful for the agents and attorneys who made his WWE signing easier. The 30-year-old then exclaimed over the jump by stating that he had received paychecks from both companies in the same month. He started training for his WWE debut right away that month and competed in just three months.
