Maria Kanellis was one of the popular names in the WWE during the early 2000s. Kanellis entered the WWE through the Diva Search and thereafter appeared at the OVW through which she earned a spot on the WWE RAW.
Kanellis’ first run in the WWE lasted from 2005 to 2010, during which she was paired with Santino Marella and even with John Cena for a brief period of time. Maria Kanellis even had her championship pursuit during that period but failed to win it.
Maria Kanellis had a second stint in the WWE from 2017 to 2020 and was released due to budget cuts in the midst of the COVID pandemic. During her second reign, she participated in the Women’s Royal Rumble for the first time and won the 24/7 Championship once, which marked her first championship win in the WWE. Kanellis, a WWE Superstar from the Divas Era, had some words of praise for the Divas Era.
Recently, while speaking with Steve Fall of the Ten Count, she said that the Divas set the tone for all that came after. She remarked that whether people choose to appreciate the divas or not is up to them since facts tell the story at the end of the day.
She mentioned Beth Phoenix, Maryse, and Mickie, saying that all of these women are still important and part of today’s generation. She remarked that she doesn’t care if her fans like her or dislike her, but the Divas need to be respected.
“Divas have done a lot. We really set the stage for everything moving forward…..We’re still part of this industry and we are still part of this generation. So, love us or hate us, but you’ve got to respect us.”

Maria Kanellis revealed about the abuse she received from people during her pregnancy
Maria Kanellis and her husband, Former WWE Superstar Mike Bennet both held the 24/7 Championship and Kannelis held the Championship while being pregnant, which makes her the first pregnant Champion in WWE history. After getting released from the WWE, the husband wife duo has since then joined AEW.
Maria Kanellis recounted the harassment she received from people while pregnant in the same interview with Steve Fall. She noted the derogatory remarks she received on social media. Kanellis stated that she received death threats while her daughter was just a few days old. The criticism she received came as a result of her being a performer while pregnant.
“She was like a couple days old and I’m getting like death threats… It’s like, come on people, it’s wrestling, and there’s plenty of other talented people out there that can fulfill that need for you. It’s just right now, I gotta take some time for me and my family.”
