Matt Cardona was one of the popular wrestlers in the WWE during his time in the company from 2005 to 2020. One of the most well-known characters of the current generation was Cardona’s shtick as the haughty Long Island Guido, who regularly used the catchphrases “woo woo woo” and “you know it.”

Cardona wasn’t a popular wrestler during his initial years in the WWE even though he was a part of Edge’s stable La Familia. Over the years, he established himself as a prominent wrestler and has since then become a one-time intercontinental Champion and one-time United States Champion during his time in the WWE. He was also a two-time WWE Tag Team Champion with Curt Hawkins.

Matt Cardona was released from the WWE in 2020 as a result of financial constraints brought on by the COVID-19 epidemic. Matt Cardona recently stated in an interview with SK Wrestling that he intended to move away from his most popular “ZacK Ryder” gimmick and portray a serious persona during his tenure in WWE.

Cardona remarked that because WWE did not want him to portray a serious role, he could not be serious. He noted that even though he had little constraints on his persona, he was relieved to be released because he was allowed to develop a new version of himself outside of the WWE.

“The ‘woo, woo, woo,’ the headband, the sunglasses, it’s dead. And I was trying to get away from that while I was Zack Ryder in WWE, but you can’t write the show…. That’s why when I was let go, I was like, ‘Oh, my god.’ Not that there were any handcuffs on,”

In the same interview, Matt Cardona stated how delighted the WWE Universe is to see their favorite talents return to the company. He added that it is quite thrilling, and that WWE has now become a must-see show. Cardona feels that that’s how wrestling should be.

Matt Cardona was also asked about his WWE comeback, and he indicated that when he declared the Zack Ryder gimmick was gone, he didn’t mean it, and that he won’t rule out bringing it back again. He stated that he is grateful for the Zack Ryder persona for making him famous, but if he were to return to WWE, he would do it as Matt Cardona.

“It’s fresh, it’s exciting, it’s must-see TV, and I think that’s what wrestling should be, But if I were to ever go back, it has to be as Matt Cardona……Without being Zack Ryder in WWE, I wouldn’t be Matt Cardona talking to you right now. It set me up for everything,”

Matt Cardona currently wrestles for Impact wrestling and was a part of the AEW for a brief period of time, after leaving WWE.
