WWE has a history of repackaging wrestlers and giving them a ring name that suits their character. Matt Cardona wrestled during his entire WWE career under the name “Zack Ryder.” Cardona gradually got over with the name, and he was destined to be a top star. However, WWE failed to bank on his popularity, and he was eventually released from the company in 2020. Following his departure from WWE, Cardona reinvented himself and is an even bigger star today.
Recent reports suggested that WWE filed a trademark for various wrestlers’ names. The names include Drew McIntyre, Dolph Ziggler, Ezekiel Jackson, and Zack Ryder as well. Out of these four wrestlers, only McIntyre and Ziggler are still signed with WWE. However, Ezekiel and Ryder have already parted ways with WWE.
After failing to get the “Zack Ryder” trademark, Matt Cardona took a dig at WWE through a tweet. Cardona claimed that a fake Zack Ryder will be making his debut on WWE since they have the trademark now. Cardona tweeted, “Is there going to be a fake Zack Ryder? Like the fake Razor and Diesel???”
Cardona also believes that an NXT star will debut on the main roster with his fake name, also taking a jab at the NXT star Robert Stone. Cardona further stated, “I dig it!!! Who from NXT is gonna be me?! Anybody but @MrStoneWWE……again.” It would surely be interesting to see if WWE seriously pulls off what Cardona is thinking, considering his tweet.

The reinvention of Matt Cardona following his WWE release
In September 2020, Cardona made his debut for All Elite Wrestling (AEW) as a surprise participant in the Casino Battle Royale at the All Out pay-per-view event. He then signed a short-term contract with AEW and made several appearances for the promotion, including a feud with Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page.
In addition to AEW, Cardona has also appeared in other promotions, including Impact Wrestling and National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). He won the NWA World Tag Team Championship with his partner Brian Myers (formerly known as Curt Hawkins) in August 2021.
Overall, Cardona has maintained a successful professional wrestling career after leaving WWE. He has been able to showcase his talents in a variety of promotions and platforms. The King of Deathmatch is currently signed with Impact Wrestling and is rumored for a WWE return.
