“He’s gonna do what you were supposed to do”- Mr. Kennedy describes the moment he learned he would lose his money in the bank contract to Edge
Mr. Kennedy and Edge
WWE Hall of Famer Edge is one of the greatest in-ring performers of all time. There is no such thing that Edge hasn’t achieved yet in WWE. Edge has been a fantastic storyteller and a great in-ring technician. He has entertained us through his involvement in some interesting storylines and has given us some of the historic matches in WWE. Edge has established himself as the finest performer in any kind of bout, whether it be a Ladder match, a Hell in a Cell match, or an Elimination Chamber match, making him one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.
Edge was forced to retire in 2011 due to a neck injury and thereafter made sporadic appearances in WWE. In 2019, he was medically cleared to wrestle and made his in-ring return at Royal Rumble 2020, and received the loudest crowd reaction of that night. He eliminated by Roman Reigns but managed to eliminate three wrestlers, one of them being Randy Orton. Thereafter he has had feuds with Randy Orton, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and AJ Styles.
This year, he formed a faction along with Damien Priest and were soon joined by Rhea Ripley. Edge unveiled a new member of the group, Finn Balor, on RAW this month, but Priest and Balor eventually turned-on Edge and viciously beat him, throwing him out of the faction.
Edge has held the Money in the Bank contract twice in his career
Edge has been the winner of the first ever Money in the Bank Ladder match. He had won the MITB contract at WrestleMania 21 by beating Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Shelton Benjamin, Kane and Christian. He then cashed it at New Year’s Revolution Pay Per View in 2006. He speared a bloodied John Cena to win the WWE Championship, Cena had just retained his WWE Championship in an Elimination Chamber match. Edge’s strategy has been followed by the future winners of the contract since then.
Former WWE Superstar Mr. Kennedy had won the third Money in the Bank Ladder Match, He won it at WrestleMania 23 by ramming CM Punk off the Ladder by using another Ladder. In May 2007, on an edition of RAW, Edge provoked Mr. Kennedy for a match for the MITB contract, which he accepted and was defeated by Edge. Thus “The Rated R” Superstar became the first wrestler to held the briefcase twice in the history of WWE. He then cashed it on the Undertaker on an edition of SmackDown to win the World Heavyweight Championship for the first time in his career.
Mr. Kennedy recently spoke with Chris Van Vliet on his show INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet and revealed specifics regarding losing the MITB contract. Mr. Kennedy stated that he was scheduled to cash in the MITB contract at WrestleMania 24, but due to Undertaker’s unexpected injury and the necessity for surgery, Vince and Stephanie informed him that he would have to do so the next week. Mr. Kennedy stated that Vince McMahon informed him that he would be cashing the contract and become the new World Heavyweight Champion the following week.
“The idea was that I would cash it in next year’s WrestleMania… And then a few months later, I feel like I only had it a month and a half, two months maybe, and they came to me… Vince and Stephanie. And they said ‘Look, we had planned on having Taker as the champion for like, a really long time. Unfortunately, he’s injured and tore his biceps, I believe, and he needs to have surgery. So we’re going to next week…’ and he laid out the scenario, and he’s like, you’re gonna cash in your briefcase, we’re gonna have a new champion.”
Mr. Kennedy’s ambitions of becoming World Champion were dashed when Stephanie informed him that his triceps had been torn off the bone. Kennedy stated that Stephanie informed him that they needed someone to take the belt away from Undertaker, and because he wasn’t medically cleared to compete at the time, they had to replace him with Edge. Kennedy stated that a situation was contrived in which he would lose the Briefcase to Edge and then Edge would follow on what he was intended to do.
“Then the next day Stephanie called me in my hotel room and she’s like, ‘Ken you tore your triceps off the bone. We’re gonna have to, we still need to get that title off of Taker though. So we’re sending this jet to pick you up. We’re gonna take you to Penn State, Edge is going to challenge you for the briefcase, and then he’s gonna go on and do what you’re supposed to do tomorrow night.'”
Mr. Kennedy was released from WWE in 2009 and from there on he wrestled at TNA and around the independent circuit.
