“Sick feeling that everybody had all day”- Mr. Kennedy recalls about the moment he learnt about Eddie Guerrero’s death

Eddie Guerrero and Mr. Kennedy

Eddie Guerrero is still one of the popular wrestlers of all time even after his passing away in 2005. Eddie Guerrero had an athletic figure and an impudent broad smile, which he flashed and became famous for. Guerrero had a natural talent for making people happy and entertaining them. He had charisma oozing out of him and was great on mic, even displaying his comedic skills through different skits and entertaining the crowd. He was one of the most technically proficient wrestlers to ever enter the arena. Eddie had a keen understanding of marketing and demonstrated it by keeping SmackDown running till his death.

Eddie Guerrero’s rivalries against Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio, Chris Benoit have produced some of the best matches in the history of WWE. Eddie Guerrero had more to do in WWE, and he most surely would have, but whatever he accomplished before his death was nothing short of spectacular. Eddie was a 1-time WWE Champion, 1-time WWE United States Champion, 2-time WWF/WWE Intercontinental Champion and a 4-time WWE Tag Team Champion; two times with his nephew Chavo Guerrero and once each with Tajiri and Rey Mysterio. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2006.

Eddie Guerrero wrestled the final match of his life on November 11, 2005 on SmackDown Brand. He faced Mr. Kennedy in a qualification match for a spot in team SmackDown for the Survivor series traditional elimination match. Eddie successfully defeated Mr. Kennedy by disqualification and this was the last time we witnessed him use his usual lie, cheat, and steal techniques.

Eddie passed away two days later on November 13, 2005. He was found unconscious in the Hotel room at Minneapolis, Minnesota, by his nephew Chavo Guerrero. Later autopsy reports said that Eddie Guerrero had died due to heart failure. Guerrero had battled through substance abuse and alcoholism early in his career but was sober during his later years and it is said that it might have been a contributing factor in his death.

During a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Mr. Kennedy recalled about the moment he learnt about Guerrero’s passing.  Mr. Kennedy said that he remembers pulling out in the arena and the guy that parks the cars informed him that Eddie has passed away. Kennedy says that when he entered the building it was a crazy and sick feeling that everyone had that day and that everyone was super sombre and sad.

“And then I remember, I pulled into the arena. And the guy that parks the cars that helps park all the vehicles told me, he’s like Eddie died. And I walked into the building. And it was just like this crazy, sick feeling that everybody had all day. Everybody was super sombre and sad. It was, it was a crazy, crazy day.”

Eddie was replaced by Randy Orton in the Team Smackdown as he died before the event took place. Team SmackDown defeated Team Raw at the Survivor Series 2005.
