Sami Zayn just did the unthinkable and dethroned the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion, Gunther. Just when everyone in the arena thought The Ring General was going to win the match in dominating fashion, Zayn proved why he is called the Ultimate Underdog. He overcame all the odds and became a four-time Intercontinental Champion. 

The match started in a rather unusual fashion, with Sami Zayn gaining the upper hand with a barrage of chops. However, he couldn’t win that game against Gunther, as he soon took control and started conducting the match at his own pace. He dominated the whole match with chops and German suplexes.

Whenever it looked like the 39-year-old had gained some momentum, The Ring General always derailed it with some brutal offense. As Gunther was controlling the match, the confidence he had in him soon turned into overconfidence. He mocked his wife whenever he took down Zayn and made her believe her husband couldn’t defeat him. Not only in the match, since the former Tag Team Champion became the No. 1 contender for his title, he didn’t even see him as an eligible contender.

However, whenever people have doubted Zayn, that’s when he has proved them wrong, like he did at WrestleMania 39. He delivered a Brain Buster to Gunther on the turnbuckle and finished the match with two Helluva kicks. And just like that, Sami Zayn finally ended The Ring General’s 666-day title reign.

Wrestling fans couldn’t control their tears after Sami Zayn became the new I.C. Champion

The WWE Universe was in it for a surprise as Sami Zayn defeated Gunther and became the new I.C. Champion at WrestleMania. While some fans were really happy to see him as the new champion, others were not quite thrilled.

One fan said he was genuinely surprised by the result and was almost on the verge of crying. Another fan saw this as a pleasant surprise and wished that now Gunther could finally focus on the main picture and win a major title. Here are some of the top reactions from fans:

While some fans labeled it the match of the night, others said it was a great story of the underdog overcoming his fears. One user even said Zayn’s win was totally undeserved and said it should’ve been Chad Gable instead of him. Overall, the majority of fans were quite ecstatic about the historic win by Sami Zayn.
