Over the course of different eras, from Hulk Hogan in the past to Roman Reigns in the present, WWE has carved out a dozen of Mount Rushmore-worthy superstars. Thus, debates are inevitable when it comes to the “Greatest of All Time.” In a recent interview, WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair named Stone Cold Steve Austin as the greatest of all time, debunking WWE’s proclamation of John Cena as the G.O.A.T.
Sitting on Chris Van Vliet’s recent podcast, the WWE Hall of Famer touched upon numerous wrestling and non-wrestling topics. One of the questions posed to Flair was, who, in his opinion, is the greatest of all time in WWE. To everyone’s surprise, the 74-year-old named Stone Cold Steve Austin, as he believes Austin is worthy of that title.
Explaining his stance, the Nature Boy said, “Well, to me the GOAT is the guy who did the most for the business, not necessarily, doesn’t mean he had to be best wrestler, but the guy that meant the most to our business and the guy that saved in my eyes, saved WWE, Steve Austin.”
John Cena is by far the most recognized WWE superstar on a global level. He has been a global ambassador of the Stamford-based promotion for decades and has carried it on his shoulders. Needless to say, Cena’s contributions to the sport have elevated it and made it popular across the world. As a result, WWE recently gave him the title of “Greatest of All Time.”
However, it was Steve Austin who ushered in mainstream popularity for WWE with the onset of the Attitude Era. His legendary feud with the likes of Vince McMahon and The Rock took WWE to unprecedented heights of success. Even after two decades, Steve Austin’s iconic 3:16 shirt continues to reign supreme on the top-selling merchandise list.
Ric Flair wants his daughter Charlotte Flair in a segment with him and John Cena
John Cena and Ric Flair hold the record for most world championships in WWE as of today. The WWE legends have won the world titles a record-setting 16 times. However, there is another superstar who is very close to making history. It is none other than Charlotte Flair, who is a 14-time Women’s Champion. She is only two wins away from tying her father and Cena’s iconic record.
Speaking in the aforementioned podcast, Ric Flair weighed in on the odds of Charlotte Flair surpassing the title reigns of Cena and Flair. The 74-year-old said, “If the biggest thing that could ever happen, John and I talked about all of this, John Cena and I. Can you imagine us walking down and congratulating Charlotte? What kind of rating that would get on TV, to see that finally happen? I mean, I think it’s the biggest thing they could do.”
The Nature Boy suggested a segment with him and John Cena if Charlotte becomes a 17-time champion. He believes their appearance to congratulate The Queen on her milestone would be a significant television draw.
Charlotte Flair will battle Iyo Sky for the Women’s Championship next week on SmackDown. It remains to be seen if she manages to win the title for the 15th time in her already decorated career.
