Is former UFC superstar Ronda Rousey a blood relative of WWE legend Roddy Piper?
Ronda Rousey was dubbed “Rowdy” after commencing on to an unbeaten record in the WWE that saw her submit foes in less than seconds of using her trademark armbar. Ronda Rousey garnered the blessings of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper himself before doing so. While in the sports entertainment industry, at Wrestlemania 31, she got to share the squared circle with The Rock and The Authority. This seemed like a fantasy pairing, but seemed doomed wearing Piper’s signature leather jacket. She sent COO Triple H through a table and nearly engaged Stephanie McMahon in a brawl also asserting why she is “The Baddest Woman on the Planet.” and the “Rowdy One.”
While many wondered whether there was an actual blood connection between the Late Roddy Piper and Rowdy Ronda Rousey, her statement noted that she had recently trained extensively with the Late wrestler’s daughter, Teal Piper, who is herself a former professional wrestler. Rousey in an interview with ESPN revealed that she didn’t want to steal the name:
“When I first started doing MMA, I was trying to think of a fight name and of course the first thing that everybody thought of was like Rowdy Ronda Rousey. And it’s like I know, but it’s like Rowdy Roddy Piper already has that and I don’t want to steal it,”
She goes on to add that she was blessed with the name by The Hotrod himself:
“Until I happened to see the ‘Rowdy’ one and got his blessing and he was very sweet about it. He was like, ‘Sure kid, no problem. Better do the name proud’ or something like that.”
The Hotrod wasn’t able to witness Ronda Rousey’s success
From the interview it was evident that, Roddy Piper was okay with Ronda Rousey to carry on his legacy as the “Rowdy” and wanted her to do justice with the gimmick. The Baddest women on the planet obviously performed her gimmick in the perfect sense. But unfortunately, in 2015, Piper died due to heart related problems, and thus wasn’t able to oversee his legacy being carried on by Rousey, in the same way he wanted. Ronda Rousey went on to become a 2-time Women’s Champion and even won the Royal Rumble this year.
