Saraya made headlines after announcing her return to the ring on the latest edition of AEW Dynamite. While Saraya might sound like a new name, she is actually former WWE Divas Champion, Paige! The youngest WWE division champion had a sweet and sour WWE career.

While she broke down barriers and kicked off the women’s evolution, she was also prone to injuries. So much so that it led to her retirement from in-ring action in late 2017. Since then, the British wrestler has appeared in non-wrestling roles, until now.

AEW provided her with a second opportunity to keep her name alive in the wrestling business. Fans were skeptical of Saraya, as AEW did not clear her to compete when she made her debut. But the former NXT Women’s Champion, would not take no for answer.

Hence, Saraya took matters in her own hands, and consulted a doctor from California. After several tests, she was deemed medically fit to compete. While the news excited fans, it also left them scratching their heads, wondering if she was close to an in-ring return, then why not sign with WWE over AEW?

Talking to Renee Paquette on ‘The Sessions’, she said, “The thing that swayed me was AEW is a new, fresh company like I could probably benefit from being thrown into a new mix.”

Saraya noted AEW offered her better options, that she felt were more beneficial in the long run. She also noted WWE wouldn’t give her the freedom she was looking for, and hence, that made the decision to join AEW much easier.

Paige had all the things she needed to be at the top of the women’s division. However, one thing that she lacked was luck. She fell prey to a career-threatening neck injury. The impact of the blow was so tremendous that it cost her a promising career. She had to control her urge to make an in-ring return until the medical team declared her fit to compete.

The 30-year-old star suffered a neck injury in mid-2016 and was on a hiatus for a long time, before announcing her retirement. However, it did not last long, as she made full recovery and returned to competition a year later. Sadly, this return was short-lived as Sasha Banks’ dropkick connected on her fused neck, leading to her retirement, again.
