The WWE has been ecstatic with the return of John Cena to the company. With the Christmas season around, WWE seems to have gifted this wonderful present to the WWE Universe. John Cena appeared on the December 16 edition of SmackDown via video call.
He stated that he would team up with Kevin Owens to face Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn on December 30th. This was the second appearance of the Cenation Leader this year. Previously, he appeared on June 27th to celebrate his 20th anniversary with the company.
John Cena’s presence is always an advantage for the WWE. The WWE has seen a surge in ticket sales for the December 30th edition of SmackDown, all thanks to the company’s golden boy.
Cena debuted as a babyface when he faced Kurt Angle in his debut match. However, he quickly became a heel when he attacked his tag team partner Billy Kidman, after they failed to win a tag-team tournament match. This was the only time Cena was a heel in his career.
The Cenation leader’s career only took off when he initiated his Doctor of Thuganomics gimmick. The rapper gimmick really put Cena on the map, and he went on to become one of the greatest superstars of all time. After becoming a WWE Champion in 2005, Cena led the company for the next decade and is today regarded as greatest WWE superstars of all time.
Everything wasn’t well for Cena before the rapper gimmick, as he was on the verge of getting fired from the company. According to Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s Dave Meltzer, John Cena was about to get released from WWE when Stephanie McMahon heard him rapping backstage. McMahon impressed with Cena’s talent, convinced her father to make him a major star in the company.
“He was actually on the verge of being cut and his push was ended by Vince McMahon until Stephanie McMahon saw him rap off television and put in the word to go with him as a major star.”

Over the months, there had been reports that John Cena would appear for a match at WrestleMania. While the news hasn’t been confirmed, Cena’s return certainly indicates that he will have a brief run for his road to WrestleMania. According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the 16-time World Champion won’t be available for most of March and February due to the filming of a movie.
