Today’s WWE on-screen product is PG-based, allowing a broader portion of the audience to view the programming. However, this wasn’t the case twenty years ago. The Stamford-based promotion would rely on violence and exploitation of women wrestlers’ s*xuality to boost ratings. Recently, a well-known superstar from that era, Torrie Wilson, cleared up a popular misconception of particular stories.
While speaking with McKenzie Mitchell, the WWE Hall of Famer disclosed how she felt while performing the controversial segments. Wilson revealed that, despite the audience believing that she felt comfortable doing those bits, it was a difficult task. Moreover, the legend explained that she displayed the opposite on-screen because if she didn’t, it would be a failure.

Whether it was the bikini contests or bra and panty matches, female stars were subject to controversial weekly matches during that time. Thankfully, today’s world of wrestling has come a long way in terms of treating women wrestlers. Over the past decade or so, many historic moments and records have been created due to the women’s revolution.
Wilson last appeared at last year’s Hall of Fame ceremony. She, along with Mick Foley, inducted her friend, Stacy Keibler, into the prestigious class. Meanwhile, the latter had done the same four years prior when she inducted Wilson into the 2019 Hall of Fame class. Since her retirement in 2008, she has returned to the ring on multiple occasions, both during the Women’s Royal Rumble matches in 2018 and 2021.
Torrie Wilson reveals what led to her 2008 WWE departure
Torrie Wilson debuted for WWE in 2001, during the Invasion storyline. Following that, she would go on to become one of the most popular divas of the Ruthless Aggression Era. She would feature prominently on television for the next six to seven years.
However, her WWE run came to an end when she requested her release in 2008. Recently, the legend spoke in detail about her departure. In an interview with Chris Van Vliet, Wilson spoke about her back issues that led to her retirement.
The Hall of Famer described how much pain she was in during that time. As a result, Wilson believed that she was not ready to be traveling all the time. Therefore, she called it quits on her in-ring career at the time.
