“Could it be my family next?”- William Regal reveals what went through his mind when he found out about Chris Benoit tragedy

William Regal talks about the day he found out about Chris Benoit Tragedy

Chris Benoit’s sins aren’t forgiven until today and they shouldn’t be forgiven given the fact that he was a murderer, who murdered his wife and 7-year-old son on 23rd June 2007. Chris Benoit committed suicide by hanging himself, a day after murdering his wife and son. Benoit was supposed to face CM Punk for the ECW Championship on 24th June 2007 at the Vengeance: Night of Champions Pay Per View but failed to show up at the event and was replaced by Johnny Nitro, who defeated CM Punk to become the ECW Champion, indicating that Benoit was also tipped to win the Championship.

WWE postponed the RAW event the next day and replaced the programming with a three-hour tribute to Chris Benoit’s life and career that included clips from his previous matches. Thereafter WWE hasn’t mentioned Chris Benoit again and won’t mention or promote him ever due to his horrendous actions during his death. As a wrestler Benoit’s talent in the ring is unrivalled and he is regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.

Former WWE Superstar and Personnel William Regal was one of Chris Benoit’s close friends before his death, but he no longer holds the same regard for his friend in the aftermath of the tragedy, and he is resentful of how horribly Chris let everyone down.

William Regal recently made an appearance on the Gentleman Villain Podcast and claimed that he and his wife were close friends with Chris Benoit and his first wife Martina. However, when their marriage fell apart, Chris and Martina separated, and he moved in with Nancy, their friendship came to an end, and William’s wife forbade Chris from visiting their home. Regal said that thereafter they stopped hanging out and the only time they would meet each other was at WWE and just greet each other.

William Regal said in the same podcast that after hearing about the incident on Monday, he was frightened and started phoning his family to see how they were doing. Regal remarked that he had not anticipated Chris Benoit would commit such a terrible act and wondered whether there was an insane person out there hurting people in this way. Regal said that because he lived six miles away from the benoit home, he had wondered whether his own family may be the killer’s next victim.

“I was walking around in somewhat of a daze all day … All day, I was calling my house to check on my family because, for some reason, I had this notion when we heard of these terrible things that had happened. I no way, shape, or form would have thought Chris had anything to do with that … On the Monday when we were hearing this, I’m in a daze, but I start to think, ‘What if there’s some insane person going ’round doing horrible things to people?’ And this, in my mind, ‘Could it be my family next? Could it be somebody that doesn’t like wrestlers?’ Because I didn’t know any of the facts.”

There have been certain theories as to why Chris committed such a horrific crime, with one theory being widely accepted is that Chris had severe chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which is a condition of brain damage and was responsible for his actions.
