WWE NXT results – 27/01/2021 (Io Shirai attacked, Finn Balor takes on NXT Tag Team Champions)
Balor with Undisputed Era

The episode featured the next phase of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament. It also included the first ever Women’s Dusty Cup. The NXT Champion Finn Balor also took on the Tag team Champions. Balor handpicked Kyle O’Reilly as his tag team partner.

MSK def. Drake Maverick and Killian Dain (NXT Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Quarterfinals)

MSK qualified for the Semi-Finals

Wes Lee from  MSK started off against Maverick. The former 205 Live GM took the early advantage by getting Lee to the mat. Lee countered with multiple kicks.

Soon Dain was tagged in and he launched his partner onto Carter. He continued using Maverick as a weapon. Dain followed with a pump kick and enziguri combo. He went for the cover but Carter broke up the win.

A spinebuster-blockbuster combo was hit onto Maverick as MSK picked the win. They are the first team to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament.

Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai def. Jessi Kamea and Aliyah (NXT Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic)

Gonzalez and Kai qualify for the next round

Kamea and Aliyah are clearly not too excited about facing Gonzalez and Kai in the opening round. Gonzalez earned her team an early advantage but Kai lost it when she faced Kamea.

Kamea and Aliyah got momentum as they kept on attacking Kai. But Gonzalez was tagged in Kamea and Aliyah lost the plot again. Gonzalez hit a clothesline followed by a one-naded powerbomb to pick up the win.

Tyler Rust def. Local Competitor

Rust and the local competitor

Malcom Bivens had handpicked the opponent for Rust. Rust clearly overpowered his opponent. He was quite pleased with his performance. He applied the Rings of Saturn to pick up the win via Submission.

Grizzled Young Veterans def. Leon Ruff and Kushida (NXT Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Quarterfinals)

Ruff and Kushida attack GYV

GYV had an advantage in the match, considering Ruff and Kushida had teamed up for the first time. GYV double teamed on Kushida early during the match.

But the new team quickly made a comeback into the match. Ruff’s technicality in the ring had improved a lot, credit to Kushida. But he couldn’t kick out when he was hit with a Ticket to Mayhem.

The Way, led by Johnny Gargano walked out to the ring and attacked Ruff and Kushida. But Dexter Lumis arrived to scare away Theory. The Way left the ring, while Lumis stared them.

Toni Storm’s segment

Strom, Martinez and Shirai

Storm came out to the ring to demand a shot from NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai. She recalled that she had already beaten Shirai in 2018 at the Mae Young Classic.

Io Shirai came out. She said that she was ready for Storm’s challenge. She took down Storm, but was attacked by Mercedes Martinez from behind. The three started brawling inside the ring. The segment ended with Storm holding the Championship.

Bronson Reed def. Isaiah “Swerve” Scott

Reed is undefeated since his return to WWE NXT

As the match began, Swerve managed to surprise Reed with a series of kicks. Reed was able to counter it and he tossed Swerve head first on the apron. Swerve continued to attack Reed’s right arm.

Reed hit a headbutt and a short-arm clothesline followed by a Tsunami Splash for the win.

Finn Balor and Kyle O’Reilly def. One-Two

Dunne breaks Balor’s fingers

NXT Champion kicked off the match with Oney Lorcan. Soon their partners were tagged in but the NXT Tag Team Champions continued to struggle.

The Champions finally came up with a plan and started attacking O’Reilly’s injured jaw. Balor was tagged in and he took on both the members of 0ne-Two while O’Reilly recovered.

Kyle O’Reilly caught Burch mid-air and applied the Heel hook as Burch tapped out. Pete Dunne walked out. The trio attacked Balor and O’Reilly. The Undisputed Era ran down but they were late as Dunne broke Balor’s hand.
