In what could be termed their biggest female acquisition since Jade Cargill, WWE recently announced the signing of former CMLL Women’s Champion Stephanie Vaquer. It seems like she’s being fast-tracked into WWE programming, as the 31-year-old Chilean wrestler has been announced to appear at this weekend’s WWE live events in Mexico City and Monterrey.
Over the past couple of weeks, Vaquer has seen it all. On June 30, she was at AEW: Forbidden Door going toe-to-toe against Mercedes Mone. El Primera ended up losing her NJPW Strong Women’s title to The CEO. Back then, no one would’ve imagined what’s next for Steph. A recent clip making the rounds on the internet saw Mone hosting an after-party post the pay-per-view.
Vaquer was seen vibing with her colleagues. She was believed to be AEW-bound, as Tony Khan had an offer on the table, apart from WWE interest. Both companies presented The Gladiator with their respective offers, and she went with the promotion she had dreamt of joining from an early age.
There’s no word on when she’ll start making on-screen appearances for WWE. However, with the kind of progress she’s made ever since putting pen to paper with the Stamford-based promotion, she might be integrated into the rosters soon.
WWE Hall of Famer and NXT’s creative lead, Shawn Michaels, was the first to openly welcome Stephanie Vaquer to WWE. Fans thought that her departure from CMLL and NJPW was abrupt. A joint press release from them confirmed that Ms. Vaquer had elected herself out of the rosters, citing personal reasons. As a result, she was stripped of the CMLL Women’s and Tag Team titles.
Stephanie Vaquer’s WWE transition wasn’t a smooth sail
WWE’s latest signee didn’t have it easy leaving her previous organization. Per Dave Meltzer, the 31-year-old’s brusque disaffiliation with CMLL left them upset with the way everything panned out.
According to the report, she signed with WWE this past Monday and told CMLL that Tuesday was going to be her last night with them. She had a few dates left under her contract, but Steph refused to truck through it.
She was originally set to compete on July 13 at an event named Fantasticamania. However, it fell apart. Another snippet from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter stated that Vaquer never seriously considered joining AEW.
With all that havoc in the rearview mirror, El Primera is starting a new phase of her career in WWE. It would be interesting to see how far she goes in front of such an omnipresent fanbase.
