A backstage segment from this week’s Raw has been under fire. It saw former United States Champion Carlito referring to Iyo Sky and Kairi Sane as Chinese in an ad-lib exchange with General Manager Adam Pearce. That didn’t sit well with the netizens who staged a ruckus on social media calling out WWE for approving of such a line.

An update has since emerged on the situation. Per Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, at least one staffer within WWE told the outlet that Carlito‘s line wasn’t scripted. Many backstage personnel were upset at what went down. That seemingly confirms that the Judgment Day member was the one who went into the business for himself. But exactly what happened?

To begin with, Iyo and Kairi were irate at Lash Legend and Jakara Jackson. The NXT duo once again caused problems for The Sky Pirates in their clash against Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez on Raw. Just when Sky and Sane had their opponents reeling around, Lash and Jakara, who were sitting front row, caused a disqualification.

Later on, in a backstage segment with Adam Pearce, The Sky Pirates were shown arguing with the GM over Meta-Four’s shenanigans. Pearce assured the dissonant women that he’d talk to NXT general manager Ava Raine to look into the matter.

Just when Iyo Sky and Kairi Sane left, Carlito barged in. He uttered, “I gotta learn Chinese.” It was perceived by the fans as a pinch of racism directed towards the former women’s tag team champions, who are Japanese by nationality. As of now, there’s no word on whether Carlito has engendered heat within the company for such an insensitive statement.

Are Iyo Sky and Kairi Sane on right track to win the tag team gold?

If Iyo Sky and Kairi Sane manage to phase out the physical disadvantage of Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill, they could capture the women’s tag team titles somewhat soon.

A few weeks ago on Raw, Sky pinned Belair in a fantastic singles match. Last week, The EST returned the favor to Iyo when the tag team titles were up for grabs. However, The Genius of the Sky was distracted by Lash Legend and Jakara Jackson.

Iyo will journey to NXT this week with Kairi as they’re set to take on the female Meta-Four members. If Sky and Sane get past their competition, they’d be in a position to claim another shot at the doubles silverware down the road.
