The recently concluded Money in the Bank pay-per-view will be memorable for many different reasons. One of the significant reasons was John Cena‘s return and his announcement of retirement from wrestling. His legendary rival, CM Punk, was also present in Canada, and WWE captured them having a conversation backstage at the event.
WWE shared footage of them casually talking on social media platform X. John Cena and CM Punk seemed to be talking about his tricep injury. The Best in the World suffered an injury during the Royal Rumble match earlier this year. He looked very happy seeing his old rival in the WWE once again. However, this isn’t the first time both legends met after Punk’s return to WWE.
They were also part of Cody Rhodes‘ celebrations when he defeated Roman Reigns at WrestleMania XL. Big Match John returned to assist The American Nightmare, and Punk joined in to celebrate his victory in the ring. However, Money in the Bank pay-per-view has been special for both veterans, as they clashed in one of the best matches for the world title in 2011.
While Cena was there to announce his retirement, Punk was there to change the course of his rivalry with Drew McIntyre forever. When The Scottish Warrior cashed in his MITB briefcase, Punk attacked him with a chair and clocked him with the title. Unfortunately for McIntyre, it was all Damian Priest needed to finish the match, hitting him with South of Heaven.
John Cena expressed his opinion on a heel turn in his final run in WWE
John Cena has been a beloved superstar for fans of all ages for the past 20 years. He has portrayed both heel and face characters throughout his career. However, the WWE Universe always viewed him as the company’s biggest face. In the post-show press conference, he discussed many aspects of his retirement.
When he was asked about tapping into his dark side in the final run of his career, he didn’t pay heed to those emotions. Cena felt that portraying a heel character would go against what he truly valued. Recently, another legend, The Rock, also embraced the heel persona and delivered one of the best storylines at WrestleMania XL.
What I do know is I try to work hard every day to be as good a human being as I can. I don’t know how much impact that would have because that goes heavily against what I value. I think fans would see through it.John Cena via the Money in the Bank post-show press conference
Earlier in his career, he portrayed a heel character as The Doctor of Thugonomics, where he would troll his opponents through rap. After a few years, he remained a beloved face throughout his career. Whether heel or face, fans are eagerly awaiting their favorite wrestler’s return to the wrestling ring once again.
