Amidst the news of the mass releases of WWE superstars, another report of a departure has come to light. WWE Hall of Famer and veteran commentator Jerry Lawler has parted ways with the company. The legend’s contract renewal was quietly declined by WWE, thus ending his 32-year-long relationship with the promotion.
According to a report from PWInsider, WWE let Jerry Lawler‘s contract expire because they wanted to align with the new era. The legend’s broadcast contract expired at the beginning of 2024, and the Stamford-based company didn’t renew it. One of the prominent reasons for his departure could be his absence from television due to his health issues.
Reports indicated that, under the old leadership, they would have renewed his contract in some capacity. Furthermore, they would have protected him due to his contributions to WWE over the years. However, that is certainly not the case in the new era, as nothing is assured in terms of one’s relationship with the company. Speaking of his health issues, he suffered a heart stroke in February last year, which raised concern among the WWE Universe.
Fortunately, he underwent a successful recovery and returned for a special appearance on the August 28 episode of Raw. During the break, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn surprised the WWE Universe by introducing the legend in his hometown. Although fans won’t be able to witness the legend’s energetic commentary and sharp wit, they will be happy to know that he remains in good health.
