Was John Cena ever a part of the US Army?
Leader of Cenation
John Cena is often regarded to be one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. In fact, he is also the most successful Superstar in the history of the company, in terms of title reigns. Cena has won the WWE World Championship 16 times in his career. This is an all-time WWE record and is jointly held by Cena and “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair.
While now Cena has moved on to pursue a career in Hollywood, there was a time he was being pushed as the face of the company for nearly a decade. In his early days in WWE, he had adopted a gimmick of trash-talking rapper Doctor of Thuganomics. This gimmick returned a couple of times during Cena’s stint.
But in 2006, John Cena debuted a new gimmick. The trash-talker went on to the other end of the spectrum post this. He started playing the gimmick of a young military man. The entire gimmick included the Leader of Cenation wearing dog tags and even cargo shorts. But this isn’t all, he even used to walk down to the ring, saluting to the crowd.
There were a lot of references to the army in John Cena’s gimmick, which led the WWE Universe to speculate that Cena might’ve been a part of the US military at some point in his career. But that has not been the case. This gimmick was introduced right after his debut film released, The Marine. The movie was produced by WWE Studios.
While most of the characteristics from the military-inspired character were reduced after the promotions for the movie ended, Cena continued his saluting gesture. In fact, in an interview with WWE.com the 16-time WWE World Champion had mentioned, “every night when I do that salute, it’s also a sign of respect to the men and women that don the uniform of the Armed Forces.”
John Cena had a blockbuster 2021
Since shifting his focus to Hollywood, John Cena started making sporadic appearances on WWE. But in 2021 he got a month off from his busy schedule and he decided to return to WWE and feuded against the Universal Champion Roman Reigns.
But his acting career received a massive boost in the same year too. He was seen as Jakob Toretto in F9 and Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad. Cena even got a chance to headline his own TV series as The Peacemaker. The same was recently renewed for its second season.
