Rookie Xavier Worthy was not only motivated by the chance to make a historic Super Bowl appearance; he was also driven by a personal vendetta against the team that overlooked him during last year’s drafts. The Kansas City Chiefs’ young wide receiver faced off against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC championship game, and his determination to prove himself was palpable.

With the monumental win, Worthy made sure to let the Bills know that they indeed made the mistake of skipping him as it opened the door for the two-time Super Bowl defending champions to draft him, and the rest is history. After finishing the game with six receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown, Worthy sent a message to the Bills.

I said it once; they skipped on me, that’s their loss

Xavier Worthy said in a conversation with KCTV5’s Marleah Campbell

The added layer of motivation in Worthy was well-reflected as he dominated the field with many impressive plays that contributed significantly to his team’s victory. In the second quarter, he snagged a short pass and stretched his body to the maximum capacity in order to reach over the pylon to secure an 11-yard touchdown.

The young wideout executed another remarkable play on the Chiefs’ subsequent offensive drive, where he skillfully caught the jump ball between two Bills defenders after quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a pass at the speedy receiver to gain 26 yards on a crucial third-and-five.

Bills’ trade with Chiefs paves way for Xavier Worthy’s impact in AFC Championship

In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Bills traded their No. 28 pick to the Chiefs in exchange for a No. 32 pick, which they further traded to the Carolina Panthers for a No. 33 pick and moved out of the first round of draft picks. They drafted wide receiver Koen Coleman using the available draft pick, which seems the right pick given his big size compared to the speed of Worthy who they skipped on.

I could see them taking a receiver, but you don’t truly know. But where they were moving from, I don’t think it mattered to us who they were picking. We were picking at 28 and we weren’t near 28 first-round grades, so you know going in, there’s not necessarily a great chance that you’re going to pick there

General Manager Brandon Beane said about the draft pick

Though the Bills didn’t purposely reject Worthy, they simply found Coleman better suited based on the team’s need, and after all, the former’s tuning with Kansas City worked out pretty well. Still, Worthy didn’t appreciate being passed on and he made sure to make them regret it on Sunday.
