New York Yankees and New York Mets offer condolences to Omar Minaya after news of his wife Rachel’s passing away is declared. The 55-year-old was pronounced dead in their New Jersey home in Harrington Park. 

According to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, there was no evidence of committing suicide or any form of illegal activities. Rachel was apparently found unconscious around 3:30 pm on Saturday. She was taken to the hospital but was unfortunately pronounced dead after an hour.

More information regarding this is expected to be released upon further investigation. Omar was apparently not at home when Rachael was found unconscious. The couple has two children – Justin and Teddy.

Omar has been part of both the NY Mets and Yankees organization. Both teams offered condolences on social media. The New York Yankees noted how “devastated” they were to learn of Rachel’s passing:

The Yankees are devastated to learn of the passing of Rachel Minaya, the wife of Yankees Baseball Operations Senior Advisor Omar Minaya…Over the course of his distinguished career in the game, he has freely given to others with kindness and friendship, and in this unthinkable time, we offer Omar, his sons Justin and Teddy, and their family and friends our profound condolences.

They further added how Omar Minaya’s family is “an extension of the baseball family” and the loss of such a family member “is deeply felt among all of us.” The Mets on the other hand noted, 

We were tremendously saddened to learn of Rachel Minaya’s passing. Omar had a substantial impact on our organization and his wife, Rachel, was always by his side every step of the way. The Minayas have been dear friends of ours for years and we extend our deepest condolences to Omar’s entire family and loved ones.

Omar was part of the Mets as their GM from 2004-10. He later joined the NY Yankees organization as a senior advisor to GM Brian Cashman last year at the start of 2023. He also worked as a special assistant to several general managers in Queens during 2017-20, as per Greg Joyce of the NY Post

Aaron Boone “heartbroken” to learn of Rachel Minaya’s passing

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone commented on organization executive Omar Minaya’s wife Rachel Minaya’s passing. He noted that “we’re all heartbroken” to learn of her death, recalling how loving and compassionate she was and how much she supported her loved ones.

Although it’s not been a long time since Omar joined the Yankees, Boone said it did not take time for him to be a part of the team. His “unique ability to connect with people of diverse backgrounds” became one of his crucial points in turning the organization to the right way.

As per SI, the couple met for the first time at a unisex hair salon in Manhattan in 1989. According to reports, it was love at first sight and they quickly got engaged during their trip to Italy. Three years following the event, they welcomed their youngest son Teddy. Speaking to Daily Mail, Teddy noted how his mother’s passing away left a “void” in the family.

That’s the only way to describe it. We love her, and we miss her – there will be a void…she’ll be here with us in spirit.

He further clarified that his family would later issue a statement regarding the situation. For now, they wish people would stand by their side during this tough time and respect their privacy. The eldest son Justin, who is part of the Portland Trail Blazers, returned to their family according to reports.
