New York Yankees executive Brian Cashman revealed that they might go for first baseman Pete Alonso in free agency. The Yankees are already planning to keep Juan Soto in the Bronx, and adding Alonso to the mix will heighten the overall roster.
Furthermore, both Alonso and Soto are represented by agent Scott Boras, who is known to be one of the best in his field. While Alonso might not be an exact replacement for Soto in case the latter leaves, he still can provide depth to their lineup.
Pete Alonso entered free agency after having a stellar year with the New York Mets. The Yankees will certainly want to sign him, considering how they declined Anthony Rizzo’s option for 2025. When asked if Cashman spoke about Alonso recently, he promptly said, “Yeah.”

While Juan Soto remains the primary focus for the NY Yankees, Alonso will also be a great mix. Brian Cashman further mentioned he spoke about “a lot” of Scott Boras’ clients. The Yankees seem committed to signing top-tier players during free agency to make a successful 2025 season run.
However, one of their strongest competitors remains just across the city. The New York Mets earlier talked about how they are not afraid to go deep in the free agency if required. They can provide quite a challenge, along with other teams, to get high-ranking players.
Juan Soto and Pete Alonso’s stellar 2024 run attracts top MLB teams in free agency
Despite the NY Yankees‘ failed World Series Championship race, the team is already looking forward to 2025. They’ll need to fill up quite a bit of their roster to make it an all-around team rather than focusing on one aspect only.
Currently, Juan Soto draws the most spotlight in free agency. Many MLB teams are ready to start offering $500 million or more to sign the superstar. Some top teams include – the NY Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, and even his former team, the Yankees.
The Yankees have offered him a $21.05 million for a year. In case he rejects the offer, the team will get compensation for the 2025 draft pick. The same applies to Pete Alonso. Alonso also got a qualifying offer from the Mets for $21.05 million.
Brian Cashman was asked if Steve Cohen's net worth makes him nervous in re-signing Juan Soto:

However, many expect both of them to reject their current offers and hit free agency to look for a long-term commitment. Brian Cashman said the organization is prepared for any scenario and will approach cautiously.

His performance earned him to be a finalist for the Silver Slugger Awards along with teammate Francisco Lindor. Soto, on the other hand, scripted his own records with the Yankees. The Soto-Aaron Judge duo was widely celebrated during the regular season run despite visible flaws in the postseason.
