The New York Yankees have lost another trade target. On Wednesday, reports emerged that the Chicago Cubs have agreed to a trade deal of starting pitcher Edward Cabrera with the Miami Marlins.
A few days ago, reports claimed that the Yankees were in talks with Cabrera regarding a potential trade move that would have seen him join the team. This development came at a time when the Yankees were having a slow offseason.
The 27-year-old pitcher, who was under team control until the 2028 season, is now joining the Cubs. According to reports from MLB.com, the Chicago-based side is giving away its top prospect, Owen Caissie and two more prospects, Cristian Hernandez and Edgardo De Leon to land the starting pitcher from the Marlins.

Last season, Cabrera started 26 games and went 8-7 while pitching with a 3.53 ERA. He managed to pick up 150 strikeouts (a career high). This was a major improvement for him after struggling a bit in the 2024 season.
That year, he went 4-8 in 20 starts while having a 4.95 ERA. He pitched just 96.1 innings and had 107 strikeouts as the Marlins finished with a 62-100 record.
While the Cubs now have a strong arm in their rotation, the Yankees have missed out on another trade target. As per insider Jon Heyman, the Bronx Bombers were “never close” to acquiring him from the NL East side.

Another pitcher they have been linked with is Freddy Peralta. The Yanks are reported to have continued discussions regarding him as well.
The American League side will be short-handed in the pitching rotation at the start of the year. Carlos Rodon, Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt are all set to start the 2026 season on the injured list. Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Luis Gil, Will Warren and Ryan Yarbrough are currently projected to make up the pitching rotation.
Social media reacts to Yankees losing out on Edward Cabrera
The New York Yankees are not getting Edward Cabrera. The 27-time World Series winners missed out on him as the Chicago Cubs were able to agree on a trade deal for him with the Miami Marlins. This development ignited some wild reactions from fans on social media.

While some trolled them, many Yankees fans on X once again expressed their dissatisfaction with the front office. One user wrote, “typical Yankees fumble” while making their feelings known regarding this.

The Yankees are having a slow offseason this year. Apart from re-signing Trent Grisham, the team has not made any other high-profile signing. One name they are constantly linked with is Cody Bellinger. Despite a strong interest in him, they have been unable to reach an agreement with him.
Where do the Yankees currently stand in their pursuit of Cody Bellinger?
It is no surprise that the New York Yankees hold a strong interest in Cody Bellinger and want him back in the pinstripes. According to MLB insider Bryan Hoch, there is clearly a gap between his years and AAV (Average Annual Value).

Bellinger had an AAV of $27.5 million in the 2025 season. Recent reports claimed that the Yankees had made a second offer for 5 years and around $150-$160 million. As per Hoch, the former National League MVP will not be taking less money than he made last year.
What I’m told is that there is a gap and it’s years and AAV… Bellinger’s coming off a year where he made 27.5 and he’s not going to take less than that, considering what he did in pinstripes.

Bellinger had an impressive first season with the Yankees. He hit 29 home runs and had 98 RBIs while batting with a .272 average in 152 games. He also showcased his defensive abilities while playing in all 3 outfield positions. All of this is a reason why the team views him highly and wants him back on the team.
