The New York Yankees imploded once again on Friday. The American League team’s new trade deadline additions, Jake Bird, David Bednar, and Camilo Doval, combined to give up 9 earned runs in 2.1 innings, leading to a 13-12 loss against the Miami Marlins.

After a strong start to the season, the Yankees have stumbled a bit. The team lost possession of the first position in the AL East Standings after getting swept by the Toronto Blue Jays. Since then, the team has been playing catch-up with the Canadian side.

At the trade deadline, the Yankees decided to strengthen their bullpen. They would acquire David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jake Bird from the Colorado Rockies, and Camilo Doval from the San Francisco Giants respectively.

The Yankees were leading the game 6-0 at one stage. In the 5th inning, they would concede 4 runs, which made it a 6-4 game. A 3-run home run from Trent Grisham in the 7th inning made it a 9-4 game for the Yankees.

Bird was then called in to make his pitching debut for the Yankees. After picking up his first strikeout, he would load up the bases. Kyle Stowers would hit a grand slam off Bird to cut the deficit down to 1 run. Bird was removed after throwing just 0.1 innings.

David Bednar then came in. The pitcher had previously struggled at the loanDepot Park in Miami. On just the second pitch, he would give up the game-tying home run. There was also another defensive error from Anthony Volpe later on. A single from Agustin Ramirez completed the comeback and gave the Marlins a 10-9 lead.

Volpe did make up for the error with a solo home run in the 8th inning to tie the game at 10-10. Two new faces in Jose Caballero and Ryan McMahon, then combined. After the former stole the second base, the latter put the ball in play, allowing him to score and help his side regain the lead.

Volpe then claimed his 4th hit of the game in the 9th inning with a towering shot in the center field. As the ball bounced off the wall, McMahon came around to score to put the Yankees 12-10 up.

In the bottom of the 9th inning, the pendulum swung again. Camilo Doval, who was the third pitcher to make his Yankees debut, blew the save. After Caballero missed a ground ball in the right field, the Marlins tied the game with Xavier Edwards advancing to third base following the slip-up in the defense.

Ramirez would then hit a little tapper in the infield. Austin Wells was unable to tag Edwards at home plate which allowed the Marlins to walk it off 13-12.
