The New York Yankees on Sunday re-signed former New York Mets star Paul Blackburn on a 1-year deal. This development did not sit well with the Yankees fans, who once again lashed out at the team management on social media.
The 32-year-old penned down a 1-year, $2 million deal with the Yankees. This deal sees him have up to $500,000 in innings incentives.
Blackburn joined the Yankees last year in August, one week after he was released by the New York Mets from the team. He went 0-3 with the Queens-based side in 23.2 innings while pitching with a high ERA of 6.85 in 7 games.
As for the Yankees, he played in just 8 games. In this, he went 0-0 and had a 5.28 ERA in 15.1 innings. With the team losing two of their pitchers, Devin Williams and Luke Weaver, both to the Mets, the team needed some relief pitchers. They thus brought back Blackburn on a short-term deal.

Williams, who joined the Yankees in the offseason last year, had a tough time in the Bronx. The closing pitcher would struggle from the mound and gave up several runs and blew saves. This offseason, he headed across the town.
The Mets brought in the 2-time All-Star pitcher on a 3-year, $51 million deal. After losing Edwin Diaz, the National League side then roped in Weaver on a 2-year, $22 million deal.
The Yankees, meanwhile, are having a quiet offseason. Apart from Trent Grisham, the team are yet to make any major signings so far, leading to their fans getting frustrated.
Yankees fans express displeasure with team following signing of Paul Blackburn
The New York Yankees added some depth to their rotation on Sunday. With Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon both set to miss the start of the season, the team brought back Paul Blackburn on a 1-year, $2 million deal and gave themselves some backup.

Their fans, however, were not pleased with this. On X, many of them blasted General Manager Brian Cashman and the front office for the moves they have made this offseason. One user wrote, “Biggest Brian Cashman Move Right Here,” while reacting to the signing of Blackburn.
Check out that and some more reactions from X regarding this development below:

They are not even running the same team back, which wasn’t good enough to begin with.

If the objective is to improve and take the next step, then they have failed to do that.
So, F for failure…so far.
Apart from the return of Grisham due to him agreeing to the $22 million qualifying offer, the Yankees have re-signed Amed Rosario and Ryan Yarbrough and picked up Cade Winquest through Rule 5. They are also reported to have picked up Zack Short, leading to more frustrations among the fans.
Yankees losing ground in offseason compared to other AL East rivals
The 2025 offseason has been a slow one for the New York Yankees. While they are engaged in talks with some top names, they are slowly losing ground in the offseason compared to their other AL East rivals.

The Toronto Blue Jays, who gave them a hard time in the 2025 season, have brought in Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce and Tyler Rogers. The Boston Red Sox, meanwhile, have acquired the likes of Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras and Johan Oviedo.
The big winners so far in the AL East division appear to be the Baltimore Orioles, as they landed Pete Alonso. The 5-time All-Star joined the O’s on a 5-year, $155 million deal after opting out of his deal with the New York Mets.
As for the Rays, they have brought in Cedric Mullins, Steven Matz and Jacob Melton.
Notable AL East additions now:

Yankees:
Red Sox: Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, Johan Oviedo
Orioles: Pete Alonso, Shane Baz, Ryan Helsley, Taylor Ward, Andrew Kittredge
Blue Jays: Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, Tyler Rogers
Rays: Steven Matz, Cedric Mullins, Jacob Melton
The one name the Bronx Bombers are keen on bringing back is Cody Bellinger. The 30-year-old impressed with his batting and fielding skills in the 2025 season with the Yankees, slugging 29 home runs and 98 RBIs in 152 games.
Recently, a report claimed that he and his agent Scott Boras were seeking an 8-year, $400 million deal. At the moment, it seems unlikely that the Yankees would meet this high price.
