Ahead of the trade deadline next week, the New York Yankees made a move on Friday. The team acquired 3rd baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies through a trade in exchange for pitching prospects Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz.
The Bronx Bombers have been looking for a solution in this position. Earlier this year, they had Jazz Chisholm Jr. playing in this position. The team also tried to play DJ LeMahieu in this area during Spring Training.
In total, the Yankees have tried 6 players as their 3rd baseman this year. Oswaldo Peraza has played the most games out of any of his teammates in this position at 48.
The acquisition of McMahon from the Rockies, who still has over 2 and a half years left on his contract, could be a massive boost. He has been a National League Gold Glove award finalist at third base in each of his last four seasons.
As per FanGraphs, McMahon is tied for 4th among MLB 3rd basemen in the Outs Above Average (OAA) in 2025. The former Rockies star has an OAA of 4 this season.

McMahon is expected to report to the Yankees on Saturday. He could make his official debut for the team this weekend when they face off against the Philadelphia Phillies.
This move of McMahon also comes at a time when his bat has gotten a bit hot. In the last 7 games, he has gone 7-for-24 with 3 home runs and 7 RBIs while hitting with a .292 average.
As for the entire season, he has a slash line of .217/.314/.403 with 16 home runs and 35 RBIs. He was one of the top performers for the Rockies in a season where several things have gone wrong for them.
Social media reacts to Yankees acquiring Ryan McMahon from trade
The New York Yankees on Friday acquired 3rd baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies. While this move solves some of their 3rd base problems, fans on social media were not too pleased to see them sign him.

Before this trade move, there had been rumors linking the Bronx Bombers to Eugenio Suarez. The Arizona Diamondbacks star is expected to be traded despite having 36 home runs this season.
Fans on X would take a shot at the Yankees after the signing of McMahon. One user wrote, “This is not Suarez” while expressing their feelings about this trade move.

While comparing his stats with Suarez, McMahon has had a down year. The Diamondbacks star has batted with a .249 average with 36 home runs and 87 RBIs.
Aaron Boone ‘excited’ to have Ryan McMahon from Rockies
Ryan McMahon is the latest addition to the New York Yankees team. The 2024 National League All-Star was traded by the Colorado Rockies on Friday. Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed his excitement to have him on the team.

While speaking on the move, the 52-year-old labeled McMahon as a ‘good defender‘. He also spoke on the ups and downs the player has had, but later backed him.
He has been an All-Star third baseman and a really good defender. He has had his ups and downs offensively this year. … He is a presence and can really defend over there at third base for a number of years. We are excited to get him.
Aaron Boone said
These words from Boone also come at a time when the Yankees have been struggling defensively. In the series against the Toronto Blue Jays, they made several fielding errors, with 4 of them coming in their 8-4 loss on Wednesday.
In the matchup against the Phillies, the Yankees were once again seen struggling defensively. The Bronx Bombers ended up losing 12-5 against the NL East side and fell 5.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the MLB standings.
