On Monday night, the Los Angeles Dodgers took a massive leap toward their eighth World Series crown as they claimed another 4-2 win and took a 3-0 series lead. This has left their opponents, the New York Yankees, with a huge mountain to climb.
In MLB history, only one team has overturned a 3-0 lead in the postseason. It was in 2004 when the Boston Red Sox shocked the world by winning four successive games after losing the first three in the ALCS to knock out the Yankees.
It was deja vu for the Yanks as their offense once again struggled. Walker Buehler, who made his third World Series Game 3 start, dominated the home team’s batting lineup and threw five scoreless innings.
As for the Dodgers offense, Freddie Freeman once again led from the front. The first baseman hit another home run in this game and tied George Springer for the most consecutive World Series game with a home run at five.
A late two-run home run by Alex Verdugo in the ninth inning did make the game a bit interesting as it cut the Dodgers’ deficit to 4-2. The Dodgers quickly wrapped the proceedings by ending the match on a ground out by Gleyber Torres.

A loss on Tuesday night would see history repeat. During the 1963 World Series between these two teams, the Dodgers swept their opponents 4-0 as Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax earned the crown of the series MVP.

A major concern for the Yankees has been the form of their captain Aaron Judge. After having another stellar regular season, the slugger has struggled at the plate in the postseason. To give him some encouragement, the Yankee fans gave him a standing ovation during his first at-bat in Game 3. However, even that failed to get him going.
There have been a total of 21 sweeps in World Series history. A loss on Tuesday night could see the Yankees getting swept in the Fall Classic for a third time after 1963 (against the Dodgers) and 1976 (against the Cincinnati Reds). The last such World Series sweep took place in 2012 when the San Francisco Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-0.
