Former world no. 1s, Karolina Pliskova and Serena Williams powered into the third round of the Yarra Valley Classic with easy wins in their tournament debuts. Pliskova struck 7 aces and 30 winners to seal a facile win over 20-year-old Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-3, 6-2.
“I feel like I need some matches so I’m definitely happy that I’m through to the next round,” the Czech said after the match. “I felt like I did a good job in the second set especially… and as the match went on, I felt I was playing better and better. I just need to find the rhythm again of playing tournaments and I thought it was a good start,” she said after the win.
Serena Williams meanwhile, played at the Margaret Court arena and dispatched former top 20 star Daria Gavrilova in 1 hour and 34 minutes sealing a 6-1, 6-4 win.

‘It was a good match for me’ – Serena Williams
Serena Williams spoke to the press after her facile win and stated that she was excited to be back on court. She said, “It feels good to be back here… I felt that I was definitely composed and in a zone and just trying to do the things I’ve been working on.”
“It was a good match for me. It wasn’t easy at all. It was lots of rallies and lots of movement, and she’s from here, so she obviously always plays hard,” the American added in her post-match press conference. “So it was really good and it felt good to clinch that in the end.”
The win extended her head-to-head over Gavrilova to 4-0.
