Third seed Karolina Pliskova moved into the Round of 16 at the WTA 500 Yarra Valley Classic event. She defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-3,6-2 in the Round of 32 and the Czech will look forward to start the season on a positive note by winning the tournament. She will be facing American Danielle Collins in the Round of 16.

Pliskova does come into the 2021 season on the back of an underwhelming year. The 28-year-old defended her crown in Brisbane last year but only made one final for the rest of the season – in Rome. She finished the season as World No. 3 only due to the frozen rankings system.

In her Round of 32 match, Pliskova absolutely dominated Elisabetta Cocciaretto beating the Italian in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Pliskova looked very determined to come out here and play her best, and we are seeing this already.

Seeing this type of tennis, we can definitely see her as a very solid contender for the Australian Open next week. Pliskova is known for dominating her opponents through her extremely strong and pinpoint accurate serve. 

Danielle Collins cruised through her second round match against Nina Stojanovic, beating the Serb in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Collins is a tough opponent to come up against as she fights for every ball and does not give up on points easily, even if she is severely on the back foot.

The American will know that she will have to step up her game in this third round as she meets a player who does not allow the opponent to get in rhythm with her big serve and groundstrokes in Karolina Pliskova.
