Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was on fire in the opening day of the second home Test against the West Indies in Delhi. The 23-year-old completed his seventh Test hundred in a commanding manner, placing his name alongside some of cricket’s greatest legends in the process.

The first day of the second and final Test match between India and West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi handed a lot of positives for the home side, with Indian captain Shubman Gill winning the toss for the first time. Batting first, India got off to a steady start, thanks to openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul’s 58-run stand off 105 balls, before the latter was dismissed by Jomel Warrican.

Jaiswal then took the responsibility upon himself, reminding fans of his temperament and maturity, far beyond his age. The Mumbai batter completed his seventh Test century post-lunch, after taking two runs off the first ball of the 51st over bowled by West Indies’ spinner Khary Pierre. He brought up his hundred off just 145 balls, ending the day unbeaten on an individual score of 173 runs off 253 balls.

Courtesy Jaiswal’s record-breaking knock, India finished with 318/2 at the end of Day 1. The 23-year-old also became the fifth batter in history, alongside Graeme Smith, Javed Miandad, Alastair Cook, and Kane Williamson, to score seven Test centuries before turning 24. Jaiswal now trails only Don Bradman (12), Sachin Tendulkar (11), and Garfield Sobers (9) on this elite list of players with the most hundreds in the longest format before that age.

Yashasvi Jaiswal reached another key milestone earlier in the innings, completing 3,000 international runs in 50 matches across all the three formats of the game. The young left-handed batter, who is currently placed seventh in the ICC Test Batting Rankings, also became only the second opener in history to score seven hundreds in the format before turning 24, equaling the record set by Graeme Smith.

Not only Jaiswal, but Sai Sudharsan, whose selection in the playing XI for the second Test had invited some scrutiny, silenced critics with his display. The duo put on an impressive 193-run partnership for the second wicket, with Sudharsan scoring a composed 87 off 165 balls.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Hilarious Pitch-Side Concussion Test on Shubman Gill Stuns Fans

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal hilariously conducted a concussion test on teammate Shubman Gill, after the latter got involved in a nasty on-field collision. The incident occurred during the final session of the first day of the second Test between India and West Indies, in Delhi.

Off the fifth ball of the 85th over of India’s innings bowled by pacer Anderson Phillip, Jaiswal flicked it hard towards the fielder at mid-wicket. While the West Indies’ fielder collected the ball, both Jaiswal and Shubman Gill sprinted for a quick single. Unfortunately, the 26-year-old Indian captain, while attempting to evade the throw, collided heavily with keeper Tevin Imlach, while the ball only grazed his shoulder.

Gill and Imlach fell to the ground after the collision. It forced the on-field umpires to ask the physios to step onto the pitch to attend to the two injured players. Once the medical examination was complete, Shubman Gill was cleared to play. As the Indian captain got up, his partner Yashasvi Jaiswal playfully performed a concussion test on him, by visibly asking him as to how many fingers he was holding up.

It left fans stunned, with many of them hilariously suggesting that the left-handed opener had turned into a ‘doctor’ for the day. Nonetheless, play continued on, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill going on to remain unbeaten at the day, stitching a 67-run stand off 129 balls.
