After a draining and drilling Test series against England, India’s next assignment is T20 cricket. The much awaited Asia Cup is back and the talks of the India vs. Pakistan clash are heating up. However, India are yet to finalize their T20I squad and have a few tough choices to make in front of them.
A few names after a successful Indian Premier League are floating around the T20I XI and it will be a stiff test for the selectors. The latest update regarding India’s squad as reported by TOI is that two players who were in the nominations for a spot in the side, most likely may not make it for the Asia Cup.
Both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer reportedly have not been taken into consideration for a spot for the upcoming Asian contest and BCCI has other plans for the duo. The board would like Jaiswal to narrow his concentration down to red ball cricket and the management would like to see him excel in Test cricket.
There isn’t any confirmed news on why Iyer has been out of the selection race. Jaiswal who travelled with the T20I team in the last world cup in 2024 didn’t get a game as the illustrious pair of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli opened the batting.
🚨 NO YASHASVI JAISWAL IN INDIA'S T20 TEAM 🚨

Now with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma nailing down the two spots after match winning performances, Jaiswal may not get a chance in the playing XI despite being in the squad.
Iyer would have most likely slotted in the middle order. However, with Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill returning as vice captain, set to be starters it might have been tough for the Punjab Kings captain to make a place for himself in the XI.

However, the current Indian set up is a hard one to get into, especially with the fact that they are winning series regularly. India hasn’t lost a single of their 4 T20I series so far under Gautam Gambhir. The current combination has featured in all the four series and is expected to stay the same for the Asia Cup.
A look at the IPL seasons of both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer
Gautam Gambhir has often said that he believes the T20I team of India should be picked on the basis of the IPL. With Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer’s selection chances dwindling it is intriguing to see the kind of IPL seasons they had this time around.

Jaiswal was one of the key batters of the Rajasthan Royals. In 14 innings he amassed a hefty 559 runs. However, the batter didn’t look at his fluent best as he often got out when the match was at a crucial juncture. The Royals had multiple batting woes and inconsistencies right through the event and somewhere Jaiswal’s game style was affected by that.
Shreyas Iyer, on the other hand had a much more impactful IPL season. Leading the Punjab Kings for the first time he showed no signs of nervousness with the bat or the captaincy hat. In 17 innings he scored 604 runs at an excellent average of 50.33.
His match winning knock of 87 in just 41 balls against the Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier was one of the best of the season showing how seasoned he is for the format. He had an excellent captaincy tenure as well taking his team to the final.
