India displayed a dominant performance against Pakistan in the Super 4s stage at the ongoing Asia Cup. However, the Indian team played an imperfect game with the bowlers and fielders having multiple lapses while the Pakistani chase was on. The tides turned majorly in India’s favor when the team came out to chase Pakistan’s set score of 171.

The Indian openers Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma played an aggressive brand of cricket charging at the Pakistani bowlers from ball one. Abhishek Sharma hit Shaheen Afridi for six off the very first ball of the innings, setting the tone.

The openers also got into multiple verbal battles with the bowlers but eventually won the bigger contest displaying much better skill with the bat. Both Gill and Sharma have been mentored by former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh.

Yuvraj Singh’s father who also was a former Indian cricketer, Yograj Singh gave a piece of advice to the two openers, post their vital innings against Pakistan.

Both players are like kids for Yuvraj. As is the coach, so are the disciples. Just as Yuvraj Singh used to play, Shubman Gill plays the same way and Abhishek Sharma plays the same way…However, I want to explain to Abhishek and Shubman to come back after finishing the match. Sometimes the boat sinks in the midstream. Play till the end. There was a mini scare when India lost 4 quick wickets. If Abhishek and Shubman play 15 overs, they will win every match.

Yograj Singh put light on the manner in which Yuvraj Singh has trained the opening duo of the Indian T20 team. Both players have played some good knocks so far in the Asia Cup. However, the main goal for India is still a few matches away as they enter the latter stages of the event.

Former Pakistani Cricketer believes Abhishek Sharma is better than mentor Yuvraj Singh

With Abhishek Sharma stealing the limelight with his aggressive batting style, claims of his comparison with some of India’s greatest players have started to surface. After his statement knock of 74 of just 39 balls and verbal battles with the Pakistani players, many compared him to Virat Kohli stating that the young left hander has a similar aura.

Another claim that has flown from Pakistan is of Abhishek Sharma being a better ball striker than his mentor Yuvraj Singh. Former Pakistani cricketer Tanvir Ahmed during a debate on the national channel PTV Sports stated that Sharma has outclassed his mentor in terms of power hitting.

Yuvraj Singh was a natural talent, no doubt. But he would usually build his innings once spinners came on and the ball got older, working singles and then attacking later. Abhishek, on the other hand, is striking sixes against the new ball right from the start. That’s why I feel he is an even bigger talent than Yuvraj.

Ahmed pointed out a big difference between the two players stating that Sharma can play his shots freely at any stage of the match. Yuvraj Singh was himself known to be one of the greatest ball strikers the sport has ever seen.

Abhishek Sharma has developed his power hitting skills under Yuvraj Singh’s mentorship as both hail from the same state of Punjab. Sharma has already shown some exquisite shots in his small career and looks to play an ultra-aggressive brand of cricket.
