It must have been an extremely different experience for the players, to have played without fans. Unusual situations, of unusual times, thanks to the pandemic. However, safety first. Thailand seems to have pulled off an event of such a high value well with strict protocols and frequent testing.

The finals were the most awaited day, needless to say. The Men’s doubles match was one gruelling, break-neck speed game. Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin of Chinese Taipei beat Malaysian Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong 21-16, 21-23 and 21-19 in 65 minutes. The Malaysians lost out on defence against the sixth-seeded pair.

In the men’s singles category, Viktor Axelsen was up against Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong.

Viktor Axelsen Thailand Open 2021
Viktor Axelsen simply outclassed his opponent and won the Yonex Thailand Open Super 1000 title.

Going by the head-to-head and past performance of the two, it was likely that Axelsen is a better player and would be more likely to win this game. However, Ng Ka could not be written off this time because he had beaten top players on his way to the finals and was brimming with confidence. However, the great Dane, the All England Champion outplayed the lad from Hong Kong, breezing past him to win the title. Ng Ka did try his level best, tried constructing rallies and did succeed when he worked hard. But Axelsen played better and dictated rallies and did not let Ng Ka take control.

The Dane played his special cross-court, sharp-angled smashes to perfection, They were deadly, both from the forehand corner and from the backhand corner. It was delightful to even watch Axelsen play that stroke so effortlessly, executed to perfection. His court movement was absolutely splendid and effortless and rhythmic, making badminton look so easy. It was a well-deserved victory for Axelsen. Ng Ka would surely have much to take away from this game and tournament. Despite the loss in finals, he has much to take away from a brilliant week at Impact Arena, especially beating second seed Chou Tien Chen. This would definitely be a confidence booster for upcoming tournaments.
