Yonex Thailand Open: Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy to play first round after re-test returns negative COVID-19 result

After reports stating that Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy had withdrawn from the Yonex Thailand Open following a positive COVID-19 test, it has now been revealed that a retest returned negative results and hence, both will take the court tomorrow to play their first-round matches. The two returned a positive result in the third test which was conducted on Monday. She had been asked to isolate for 10 days after the same.
Saina’s was drawn to face Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the first round but after the Japanese contingent pulled out of the Open due to COVID-19 concerns, the Indian star will face Malaysia’s Kisona Selvaduray.
HS Prannoy’s match against Lee Zil Jia to go ahead
HS Prannoy‘s retest has also returned negative results and hence his first round match against Malaysia’s Lee Zil Jia will go ahead tomorrow. In the same way, Saina Nehwal’s husband Parupalli Kashyap who was kept under observation following Saina’s positive test result will play in the first round against Canadian Jason Anthony Ho-Shue.
Meanwhile, Indian stars PV Sindhu and Sai Praneeth have suffered losses in the first round already in the women’s and men’s category respectively.
