Yoshinobu Yamamoto and the Los Angeles Dodgers made a massive statement on Tuesday. The Japanese pitcher tossed a complete game and helped his side to a 5-1 win in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series (NLCS) against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Dodgers held on to a 2-1 win in Game 1 after a spirited showing from Blake Snell. The 2-time Cy Young Award winner pitched 8 scoreless innings and gave up just one hit. After 8 innings, he was replaced by Roki Sasaki.

While Sasaki and Blake Treinen struggled a bit, the team did get over the line. Game 1 was the Dodgers’ first win over the Brewers in 2025. They had lost all 6 meetings against them in the regular season.

The proceedings did not start well for Yamamoto as he gave up a home run to Jackson Chourio on the very first pitch of 1st inning. The right-handed pitcher was able to shake off this disappointment and got locked in.

Following that home run, he gave up just 2 more hits and picked up 7 strikeouts. A 2-run home run from Teoscar Hernandez, a solo shot from Max Muncy, and RBI singles from Shohei Ohtani and Tommy Edman led the Dodgers to a 5-1 win.

Yamamoto finished the day by throwing 111 pitches to achieve a complete game. This turned out to be his first complete game in his MLB career.

Yamamoto’s complete game was the first in the Dodgers’ postseason history since Jose Lima‘s complete game against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 of the 2004 NLDS. It is also the first postseason complete game since Justin Verlander threw one against the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the 2017 ALCS.

In his previous start in Milwaukee, Yamamoto struggled. He was unable to get out of the first inning as he gave up 5 runs (3 earned) through 4 hits and 2 walks. A massive turnaround from him has now put his side in a commanding position in the NLCS.

His strong showing led to the Dodgers taking a 2-0 series lead. Fans on social media would lose it as Yamamoto tossed a gem.

While several users on X celebrated his great performance, some trolled the Brewers. Meanwhile, one user wrote, “Just give them the trophy,” while expressing that the Dodgers were “inevitable” in the postseason.

The Brewers now find themselves in a tough situation. Just like the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALCS, they are now 2-0 down against their opponents while losing Games 1 and 2 at home. The last time a team came back to win a best-of-seven series after losing the first two games at home was in 1996, when the New York Yankees came back to win 4 straight against the Atlanta Braves to win the World Series.

Dave Roberts heaps huge praise on Yoshinobu Yamamoto following Game 2 victory

After penning down a 12-year $325 million deal with the team, there were heavy expectations on the shoulders of Yamamoto. Following a successful first season, which resulted in him becoming a World Series champion, the right-handed pitcher became the ace of the team this year.

While speaking with the reporters after the game, Roberts expressed that he did not give Yamamoto much leeway last season, as the team would often turn to their bullpen to close out the games. With the bullpen struggling this year, he gave Yamamoto the chance to go out in the 9th inning, a decision which turned out right.

I see a real confidence. I think that’s what it is. Last year, certainly, there was a transition and even in the postseason, I didn’t give him a whole lot of leash… I think this year, he’s got true confidence for me that third time through at pitch 90, he feels that he’s the best option. So I think for me, that just gives me that confidence.

Dave Roberts told the reporters

Roberts was criticized for his decision to take off Blake Snell in Game 1. The decision almost cost them as Roki Sasaki and Blake Treinen ran into some trouble.

After the game, Snell expressed that he was confident about going out back in the 9th inning. It could have been back-to-back games where Dodgers pitchers had thrown a complete game if Snell were on the mound in the final inning.

The action now shifts to California for Game 3. The Dodgers are two wins away from returning to the World Series and getting one step closer to defending their crown.
