Dillon Brooks, the Memphis Grizzlies’ guard, had some disrespectful comments for LeBron James after his team won Game 2 and tied the series 1-1. Brooks instigated James by saying he did not care about the veteran because he was ‘old’ and he did not respect anyone until they scored 40 points on him. That wasn’t it from the 27-year-old becoming a huge talk of the town with those words of shame for the Lakers superstar.
“I don’t care, he’s old,” Brooks said. “I was waiting for him to do that. I’m expecting him to do that in Game 4, Game 5. He wanted to say something when I got my fourth foul. He should have been saying that earlier on.” Dillon Brooks went on saying, “I poke bears. I don’t respect no one until they come and give me 40. I pride myself on what I do — defense and taking on any challenge that’s on the board.”
Well, James and the Lakers did not appreciate Brooks’ trash talk and responded with four consecutive wins to end the series. While he did not score 40 in any game, but he was dominant throughout the series and had a 20-20 performance in Game 4. The Lakers also showed no mercy in Game 6 and crushed the Grizzlies 125-85, handing them their worst playoff loss in franchise history.
Brooks’ comments came back to haunt him as he became the target of mockery and ridicule from fans and analysts alike. One of them was NBA legend and Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas, who hilariously trolled Brooks on NBA TV’s postgame show. Thomas recalled Brooks’ challenge to James and said, “Didn’t my man say, ‘I don’t respect nobody until you give me 40?’ It’s like, ‘Bam! You asked for the 40? Here’s the 40.’” Thomas and his co-hosts burst out laughing as they discussed the Lakers’ win.
Dillon Brooks leaves the locker room early after disappointing playoff exit
Brooks refused to face the media after Game 6. According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, he left the locker room before reporters were allowed to enter for the postgame conference. He probably wanted to avoid answering questions about his comments and his performance.
Isiah Thomas was not the only one who roasted Brooks for this fiasco. Many fans took to social media to mock him and his teammate Ja Morant, who also talked trash during the series. Some fans called Brooks a clown, a fool, and a choker. Others said he should never disrespect James or any other superstar again.
Brooks will be a free agent this summer and he might have hurt his chances of getting a big contract with his poor showing in the playoffs. He averaged 14.3 points per game on 39.6% shooting from the field and 32.6% from three-point range. He was also fouled out three times in six games.
The Grizzlies will have to decide whether they want to keep Brooks or let him walk. With the NBA world lashing out at him, the front office might want to avoid the negative attention that Brooks attracts to the organization.
