2009 US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro has congratulated Novak Djokovic on winning his first Olympic gold medal. The Serb reigned supreme by beating Carlos Alcaraz 7-6, 7-6 in the final on Sunday (August 4).
Djokovic was sublime under pressure, saving four break points in the ninth game of the first set. He eventually clinched it in the tiebreak after one hour and 32 minutes. Alcaraz hung on until the end, but the Serb eventually clinched victory by winning the second set with a similar scoreline.
After the match, Del Potro took to social media to congratulate Djokovic.

It was Djokovic’s first Olympic gold medal in his fifth appearance at the event. One of the reasons behind Djokovic’s long wait for his first Olympic gold was Del Potro. The Argentine beat him in the 2012 London Olympics bronze medal match.
Then, the 2009 US Open champion also got the better of Djokovic in the first round of the 2016 Rio Olympics. The Serbian was crying uncontrollably that night after leaving the court.
Novak Djokovic completes the set at the Paris Olympics
World No. 2 Novak Djokovic finally got his hands on the Olympic singles medal on Sunday following a straight-sets win over Carlos Alcaraz.

After almost two decades of dominance, Djokovic had broken almost every tennis record there is. However, the Olympic gold was the only missing piece of the puzzle. With that being achieved in Paris, the Serb’s claim for being the greatest player of all time has been strengthened.
Djokovic achieved the Career Grand Slam in 2016, beating Andy Murray to win his first Roland Garros title. It was also his fourth Major title in a row, having won the Australian Open earlier that year and Wimbledon and the US Open the previous year.
With his latest win, Djokovic has become the third male player to win the Career Golden Slam (winning all four Grand Slams and the Olympic singles gold) after Rafael Nadal and Andre Agassi. He is also the second man after Agassi to win the Career Super Slam (winning all four Grand Slams, the ATP World Tour Finals, the Davis Cup, and the Olympic singles gold).
